Default First Time Trapping Skunks

With this warm weather I figure that the skunks will be starting to come out, if they haven't already, and I figured that I'd chase a few out at the lake that are always showing up in the summer. I have a dozen 120's and I'm going to buy an enclosed live trap from Peavey Mart.....maybe manufacture one or two more based on the store bought one. For now, I can use the 120's but when people start to frequent the campground I'm going to need live traps. Being a first time skunk trapper, I'm looking for any tips that I won't find in the manual. Sets, bait.....any advice would be appreciated.

I am no expert but ensure your live trap is closed in on all sides exempt the ends and have a tub of water ready beside the trap to drown them. Best way no spray. Don't shoot them I just shot 3 in my coon live traps and they sprayed everywhere. I shot them all in the heart lungs they all sprayed. I was gagging and I have a pretty strong stomach I can take a good whiff of marten magic any day.
Bait sardines, cat food, marshmallows, dog food, eggs/shells they love eggs. I even caught a skunk in a 330 set for a badger with muskrat meat.

You'll connect if you are in their area. Those things will find your bait.

Get a Koenders (sp) trap from UFA. They are awesome and have never failed me yet. On #4 skunk already this year.

I just use cat food in my live trap, as that is what's attracting them to the house in the first place

I agree with the notion of shooting them....always with a heard head neck shot they can't spray, that's not true.....fetching an arrow from one is no fun either!

If you use peanut butter and marshmallows you avoid cats. Although catching a cat only means you can release it lol.
If you use a Havahart trap make sure you cover it with a sheet or something that will allow you to pick up your cage after the catch .
So far I have yet to have one spray when I transport them to wherever , PROVIDING they are covered !Back of the truck etc.
Dropping the cage WILL get you results OK !
Gentle and quiet is the key .
I make my own traps out of eight inch plastic pipe works well. a lot cheaper too.
For skinning after I euthanize them I let them hang overnight by the nose and skin them when they are semi stiff , it makes it easy to cut around the vent without leaks etc.
DO NOT try the exhaust pipe method with new vehicles it wont work ! Bad deal ! a lawn mower engine or such does work !
Water or Co 2 works well . you need a permit for carbon monoxide .

On my uncles farm he just used dog food to attract any skunks that came in the yard. His neighbor had a rectangular trap, big enough for it to get in but not lift it's tail. I asked why so many air holes, he said their water holes. Then I got why the skunks went for a drive to the pasture slough

There's another thread here with info for anyone else looking for info about trapping skunks.

Thanks for the tip about buying the Koenders live trap. It's the same make that is sold at Peavey Mart. I like the pipe idea for making homemade traps as well. I will be using the dugout method of dispatching.

Buy a syringe so you can collect the eau-de-pew.

Much more potent than the diluted vendor's stock.

Two "donors" made all my lures this year.

I use the Havahart traps, they are totally enclosed 5 sided trap plus the door, and the beauty part of the trap is that you can pick it up and carry it anywhere with Mr skunk, and stand it up beside the garden hose and fill the thing up full of water. Done. They were $100 before th dollar went in the toilet. That's the only trap for me for acreage and garden business, mine is a good size for coon too.

I really should bring some more in.
