I would go to the 60 gallon just cause... I'm the kinda guy that figures bigger us always better. We did the same in our house, and I don't regret it.

I've never once had a customer complain about too much hot water. When upsizing its important to be sure the new tank can physically fit the space, as well as with additional height there's still sufficient upward grade to the chimney, and correct chimney sizing (40 US Gallon tanks have a 3" chimney, larger tanks typically have a 4" chimney, though larger do exist).

Soap test those gas pipe joints!!

I just went through the same thing. I don't know if reviews were accurate but Home Depot sells rheem. They don't come with good reviews but they might be fine. I ended up buying a 40 gal 9yr warranty name brand, (best)water heater from rona. Was decent price & my neighbour helped me install. The one I got has two anodes which reviews shows adds life. Who knows; will see I guess. Only two in our house so 40 gal is lots.

I've seen a number of clients in newer homes with sizable ensuite soaker tubs where they can't even fill the tub with hot adequately, that's one occasionally overlooked detail to check out when looking at a home.

Renai hot water on demand system and as much as you want.

Have had one for 8 years now when we built and will never look back, all bathrooms being used, washer going and the dishwasher etc and all users are getting hot water constantly.

Check Home Hardware for prices. I got a 40 gal. in Stettler last summer for $385 on sale. Even their regular prices were cheaper than anyone in Red Deer.

Not all hot water tanks are created equal.
Home hardware carries gsw. There's a reason it was that cheap.
How long are you planning on running it? An extra 100 over many years is not that much more.
