I used to read and follow the Sun folks... but on some issues and of late its so poison filled I'd hesitate to use it to wrap fish.

Yea, well - I've pooped things more appealing than the CBC.
Little far left is an interesting term. If you gave the CBC an enema, you'd get an avalanche of liberal propaganda.
Pull the plug on them, invest the money in proper healthcare. If they are so good, they'll survive.

Default Sounds like a good idea - some accountability to tax payers ...

Can't say that I feel sorry for them ( the CBC ).

Their the ones that got political, they have no business using tax payers money to push a socialist left winged agenda on to the rest of us. (guess their pizzed the general governorship didn't stay in their pocket - Michaelle Jean, Adrienne Clarkson ceded to them by Chretian to stay quiet about his scandal after scandal)

The "panels" they put together who weigh in on current issues, supposedly representing Candians, are laughable !!

... Where do they round these people up from ?? .... never seen such high concentrations of socialist, granola head, liberal left, gay types in all my life !!

TBD

X2, I think Sun News should be taken off the air, it's deplorable that Canadians would be given choice....

You must have been watching a different CBC... I remember them taking the lead and being the first to report on a number of Liberal scams.
I don't care who reports what as long as it is accurate and generally balanced.

I think most of us are smart enoouigh to wade through bias when it is presented and make our own decissions.
It would be a fool that relied on any single source or upon only left or right winged sources to get their info.

I would like to add that I know that my position WRT the CBC is not popular here.
Perhaps it is because for much of my life the CBC has been about the only thing I had that connected me to home when I was away.
Who knows?
They are not perfect but they played no small role in the unification of Canada and in helping to provide the voice of freedom to people behind the iron curtain during the Cold War.

Anyway I appreciate that this time... when discussing the CBC everyone has kept it civil and stuck to either facts or their thoughts about the CBC.

Not trying to shout down each other is important during any exchange of ideas.

Left/Right/Gay.....doesn't matter. Being given $1,000,000,000 of taxpayer money and fighting to not be accountable for that money? When you receive money from anyone........they own you.

The CBC, in terms of being a subsidized national network, certainly had a purpose in the distant past, and a lot of what you say is true. I am very thankful for its existence and legacy going back to the 50's to 70's, when I was growing up and we had exactly 2 channels (something that when told leaves my children shuddering in the horror of how we survived?). But the world has changed. The CBC is anything but "accurate and balanced". It has, unfortunately, succumbed to being a very self-serving organization with a strong and very obvious left wing bias - that's been very true for many years, but has gotten increasingly worse.
The question isn't really about that. It is about whether it is justifiable, in the current media environment, for the taxpayer to subsidize (roughly $1B per year - that is a LOT of dough however you cut it) a TV network. Surely Canadian "culture" and identity are now strong enough to "struggle along" without this kind of welfare? And there is nothing worthy of news (or even relatively unworthy?) that does not get balanced coverage from many other sources in the current milieu. The only people who "need" the CBC any more are the con artists whose endeavours are too weak to be self supporting, and the overpaid and over indulged executive branch of the network. The public have no such need.
And, the real question that was asked here (?), the CBC have the gaul to think that the taxpayers who pay their inflated bills do not have the right to input on the employment terms of their personnel, or any other aspects of their operations. They just want (like some senators?) to have us unquestioningly worship at their self-appointed alter as our arbiters of correct thinking.
It is way past time to sell the whole thing to private interests (its infrastructure and "rights" alone are worth several $B) - or convert it into a self financed "public network", as is the case with the several very viable (and sometimes excellent) US "public 'networks that sustain their viewership by providing specialized broadcast services to those who want them and are willing to pay for them.
It has become just one of those "sacred cows" whose mandate no longer justifies the cost or sheer annoyance. And the arrogance demonstrated by its executives in terms of accountability is the best illustration of why its day is done. Get rid of it!!

Agree on the panels and round table discussion groups, people nodding in the direction they are steered by the host with a token right winger that is the "bad guy"

Also tough to swallow a politicized tax payer funded institution. But I also have difficulties how the sun news pushes their views via commentary, corporate Schills at their best.

I gotta find news channel worth watching.

Quite honestly I think that both the CBC and the Sun News Network suck but if we have one of them I think that we should have both of them. One far left network offset by one far right one. Meanwhile, I'll watch Global for my news.

What? How can you question the CBC? If it wasn't for them, how would you know you are superior to our American neighbors? What would we do with all the grads from Ryreson? Do you really want them spitting in your Big Mac, cuz that's where they'd be working without the CBC!

Seriously, if you can sell the idea hat the CBC is a neutral news organization, you could be running the CIA's plausible deniability section. But then again if you're so inclined you probably loathe the CIA.

Let those who enjoy the CBC fund it. Personally, I'd rather see the government providing essential services over questionable TV.

CBC IS entitled to other people's money and lots of it. Even former employees can be found slurping at the trough. Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin, Adrienne Clarkeson to name a few.

Both Pam and Duff worked for CTV. Not much of a Con pool of talent at the CBC, maybe Rex Murphy. That's about it. As for Adrienne, think she was a Liberal appointee as was Jean.

Easy for me. The CBC doesn't want us to have guns or to eat bambi. As a result they get zero votes from me.

For what it costs to run the CBC, we could pay for the new fighter bombers we will soon buy. Something a G-7 country actually needs to field.

Default Would like to see them move to the PBS model in the USA ....

If their producing content Canadian's want - they'll be supported.

Should be volunteer donations by the public ( wouldn't that get the budget's tightened up in quick order ).

No more birthday parties for George Strombopoulus ! (whatever)

TBD

PS .. more importantly - NO More political activism or Round Table Discussions !

Exactly!

CBC should be direct public funding based on crowd sourced donations.

In fact, I wonder if we could run more of govt based on a crowd sourced model.

We should be able to do public works funding of projects, no?

And all crowdsourced govt $$ should be tax deductable.

It didn't take very long for the usual supporters of the CBC to stand up and say...I am sure glad that a billion dollars of taxpayers money is going to support my left wing views but them darn right wingers over there, went and raised money on their own, we should shut them down some how. Only me and the people that think like me should be heard.

I hate liberals and socialists as much as anyone but I respect their right to speak.

Even so, the CBC sucks bad that even the lefties won't watch the crap they produce. The only money maker they have is Hockey Night In Canada and if scuttlebutt is right - they will lose exclusivity on that next year. Their viewership is already in the low teens and has dipped into the single digits on occasion. I see them basically as affirmative action for stupid people.

I figure people should pay only for what they watch and if some idiot thinks the CBC is wonderful - then he should pay to watch it and not me. If they can't support themselves privately, they aren't worth supporting at all.

Let all media be privately funded. I don't want my tax dollars paying for someone to spout views that are simply not mine in any way shape or form. The only half decent thing on there is Hockey and its not year round.

For those comparing the Sun to the CBC, get real. One is privately funded and makes their $$$ their way and can spout whatever views they want. I couldn't care less if they were far right or far left, or changed into a media group solely focused on the watching of paint drying. I'll watch if I want or not. The CBC is taxpayer funded so should support views of all taxpayers which is completely unrealistic, so there should be no taxpayer $$$ at all. If a media company cannot make it on their own in this day and age, they probably shouldn't be on the air in the first place.
