"Gifting" Guns within Canada
I would like to gift a rifle to my newphew in another Province, but don't know what is required at both ends to complete this transaction. Also, how would you recommend shipping the item and what is required to transfer names.
Would much appreciate your comments and advise.

He is must have a valid PAL, there is no longer a registry for firearms [other than something that is restricted. ie. handguns] so you don't have to worry about transfers. I've shipped rifles via Canada Post insured and never had any problems......

Just out of curiosity, would the same thing work if I had a pol? What if a friend or uncle sent me a gun? Or in order to transfer it to my name I must have a pal?

Not sure about how a POL would come into to play, but unless its a restricted there is no longer any "transfer" process. The long gun registry and its records are gone.

I renewed my licence about a year ago, and they didnt even question me. I even had questions about it and called and they answered without mentioning that it was going to be phased out.
So not sure...

Just got my renewed POL in Feb. Good for another 5 years.
Still don't understand the POL/Pal thing. With a POL one can posses firearms but can't purchase firearms - So what's that. One could posses a vault full of arms, but can't buy one???? Can buy ammo though, but not guns.

I never understood this either, unless POL's come with conditions indicating the time duration it takes for possession to be considered acquiring? For example, if a friend lends a hunting rifle for period of time, is that possessing or acquiring if you hang on to it for an extended period?
And then there is the chicken and the egg thought: If you get a POL, then you are licenced to possess but not acquire guns, so then how does one legally acquire? Beforehand and then apply for the POL?

If it`s not shipped to Quebec it won`t be a hassle. If shipped to other than quebec, no registration. If shipping out of Quebec just call Miramichi and have it unregistered and send by Canada post. You just need a valid permit both ways. But who know`s what either party has.
