If you tiled the floor, did you strengthen the joists or sub-floor?
How about the shower base or tub, any special tricks to prevent deflection and leakage?

Old house, sagging joists. Lift and support. Normal handicap shower doesn't work for people like this, so I rip the tub out, install a drain, waterproof the floor, using the Kerdi system and tile it. Also have to raise the toilet on a waterproof base. Then you build a very low curb to contain the water.

Have you ever put in those 'sit in tub' deals that have the opening door? They look great for old people, although soap on a rope may be a prequisite.

The first use of the Kerdi system I saw was in a house where they were converting the laundry room off the attached garage entrance for a wheelchair accessible shower. That job made me reflect on how easily lives can be abruptly and massively changed; the client was my age and was in a car accident that rendered him paralyzed from the waist down. He and his wife had a toddler and an infant, I was in on the renovations while he was still recuperating in hospital.

Obviously people who are legitimately wheelchair ridden have a rough time; I find it very odd that many people wind up in them or in scooters largely due to the issues between their ears rather than actual issues with their body, of course excepting thier self-administered weight and it's associated problems. It's kind of an extreme version of the victim mentality.

Drawback, besides cost, is that you have to get in, fill the thing and then drain it, before you can get out. You might be wrinkled, like a prune, by then. No quick exit.
