Default Bear id grizzly or blonde black bear

me partner and I where sitting out in the snowstorm glassing the hills for mule deer when movement catches the eye of my partner, we see the bear in the linked photos feeding up a very large very steep side hill at 650M first impression color phased black bear talk to partner he's thinking young grizzly we watch bear for about 30 min before he feeds away couldn't get a photo of it looking in our direction but did note a square looking face and long front and back legs. also noted lack of pronounced hump and how fat short and square shaped the body was. in the end decided not to take the shot and let him walk.

what do you guys think young grizzly color phase black or not enough angles?

Black bear. Ears appear proportionately larger relative to head and the hump is too subdued.

As others have said, big ears and no hump. Black Bear.

Don’t know how all you experts can be so sure , head is down , picture not clear , nothing to compare bear to for size. But what do I know , I just live in the middle of the largest population of grizzlies in Alberta.

Definitely a bear. Looks like a youngster, and a rolly poly one at that, so I wouldn't bet the farm, at that distance, from one pic.

Grizz

You guys need to scroll down, there's more than one pic. And it's definitely a black bear from what I can see.
Heck, Moose can even tell by the claws.

LOL...good eye!!😝😂
I’m leaning 95% towards color phase but I’d want a better look before I touched one off.

This was our exact field judge as well as a really fat young bear, it’s hard to tell looking at 650m in a snowstorm for a 100% and this area is know for both species. In the end deciding on not pulling the trigger was the safest and I’m hoping this bear will stick around and get a bit bigger for next year.

I would say based on the photos nothing says grizzly to me.

You can zoom up in those photos (hump, head shape, ears, the butt, etc.. and there simply isn't anything outside of the colour that says grizzly. And if you are up near peace, there are lot's of that colour phase. It's a great colour phase.

Having said that, better to be 100% sure if you are taking the shot.
