Big game tools
I am intrested in what tools of the trade folks use in bringing big game from the bush to home....?

I use a lot of game calls and rattling antlers. To bring game to me so I can shoot'em.
Then to bring game out to my truck I may use my Quad or my home-modified game cart.
It is a two wheel "dolly" I bought from Canadian Tire. I put bigger tires on it and modified the platform a bit.
This pic was before I switched to bigger tires.
And then there is always the option to bring a couple of young guys along (my son and nephew) to do the dragging.
Last year I cut my buck in half and dragged him out with this "dragging harness" I had bought at C.T.

When I hunted Moose, I always had a winch on the quad, argo and truck. A gambrel made out of 1.25 in threaded pipe that fit together and spread to 42 inches. A 1.5 ton chain hoist, 12 ft of extra chain with grab hooks 1 chain always had a round or slide hook on it, in 3- 4ft pieces, a battery powered reciprocating saw with a 8 inch blade for cutting in half, only ever used for processing meat. A chain saw, and a good assortment of knives, tarps and game bags. This gear allowed the animal to be processed and hung fairly quick. When we hunted from a canoe or 14 foot aluminum, we always carried a good supply of rope and a come-a-long, and chest waders.

Hey Duffy, how did that end up working for you? Good idea cutting it up first.
I've always wondered how well they work on a proper "Alberta-Sized" deer like yours.

The back half (or less that half) I just dragged out with a rope. The harness was in my truck so I got it on for the bigger front "chunk".
You are right about the size of our bucks. You see those fellows shooting bucks in Alabama and Texas and then grabbing an antler with one hand and dragging it out. Those deer are sure not like our big Alberta bucks.

First I carry it, then I put it in my truck, and then I drive home.

Mostly just a knife, some cord, game bags and a backpack.

Put a nice buck in the trunk of a big Pontiac once. Brought a moose home in a mini van but got blood on the carpet and got shut down by my wife.

2 years ago - dragged WT buck across field by looping webbing around antlers and then over my shoulder, dragging through brush field then putting in the back of my toyota corrolla (seriously).
last year - mulie buck of my friends. team drag to bike trail. buck goes whole into an old "chariot" (2 kid bike trailer) and then biked him a couple km down trail to truck. slow biking as we were definately above design weight. full suspension mountain bike with disc brakes.
only other tools - knife, tarp and a small folding saw.

First I drag it with rope but (it is curled up), then I put it in my truck, and then I drive home. My version of Fran's way.

I usually just grab em under the jaw with a hay hook.
If I have help and its a long haul...we tie the head between the front legs and put the hooks through the legs.....works great.

A quad, a pull harness that Duffy showed, a couple of sharp knives and I try to keep a step ladder in the back of my truck for easy loading of bigger bucks. Deer goes on top of ladder.......one end lifted onto the tailgate...........the other end is lifted and the ladder with the deer on it slides right onto the bed of the truck.

So you use the "lever action" loading method.
When I use the ladder to load a deer in the truck, I tie the deer tight to the ladder. Then when I get home I drive up to the barn and slide the deer out still on the ladder and drag it in. I have a come-a-long attached to a beam with a hook hanging down. I stand the ladder up under the hook and hook it to a rope loop on one end of the deer or the other. Tighten up the come-a-long and the deer is hanging. Now I can untie the deer from the ladder.

I just bought one of these on Tuesday from Bass Pro. Have tags in 406 this year and am often a long way back from my vehicle. Will also use it to haul all my decoys and pack for waterfowl hunting. Some of the ducks unlimited sites have a long hike in!
Also thinking about getting one of these babys... made right here in Calgary:

if you tie a sheet of heavy poly or one of those crazy carpets to the lead end she'll sled a lot easier. though downhills might get a little hectic.

Is this legal as you only have 1 tag and 2 carcass parts that are not joined?
Just curious according to the regs? Picture didn't work. Cutting In half and taking deer out in 2 pieces?

We use one of these calf sleds. they slide very easy on snow orgrass and two guys can very easily lift and slide into a truck.

Yes, it's legal. I'm sure that there are a lot of people, myself included, that have packed animals (moose) out of the bush that are quartered. Check the regs about leaving evidence of sex (utter or scrotum) and species (in the case of deer - the tail) on the carcass.

Of course it is legal.
From the hunting regs, page 41
Quote:
It’s not necessary for the full hind
quarter of meat to remain intact while still bearing the required evidence,
provided that portion of the leg and tendon where the tag is attached also
has the evidence of sex, species or class still attached to it.
|
Any competent F&W officer can count parts and tell if there is one Deer. or whatever, or more then one.
One front half plus one back half equal one Deer.
Two hind quarters plus two front quarter equals one Deer.
You don't have to tag every piece, only the piece with the evidence of sex on it.
