Headed out on the McLeod river this canada weekend with a couple friends. We put in at the confluence of the Embarras river on Hwy 47 and took out just north of Peers on hwy 32. This being my first river trip, it was a nice little river to experience this. Its a class I to II river with only one Class II to III- section. Pretty sure mid to end of June is the perfect time for this river. Any lower and some of the rapid sections you would really have to pick your way through, the way it was all you had to keep a close eye on was the ledges created by the boulders in the river. Sometimes they were just under the water and you wouldn't have been able to float over them.
Just after put in. The captain of the vessel checking things out.
The first day we had great weather for paddling. It was warm and the sun peeking through the clouds every once and awhile. The river for the first section had quite a few class I rapids between the calmer sections.
First big slow pool. This would have made a great camp spot if it wasn't so close to the start!
Wicked cliff on the one side
Sundance creek confluence. Neat spot nice sand bar on opposite side to fish off of. Again another great deep pool
Taking a break from the
canoe.
We camped just past the Willmore park south of Edson. There was a little backcountry campground that I had been told about. This big wide open grass site was off the river about 150yrds. I don't think I've ever donated that much blood to the local wildlife before! Next time I WILL be packing after bite!!!!
Day two started off with another class II rapid. Just like the ones just before campsite, there was some hidden shelfs to be avoided and but a pretty easliy determined path to pick your way through. Weather was blue sky, no clouds and sunshine. Great way to start the day! After coffee of course!!
Packing the boats
Myself and the paddle partner.
Not far from the first camp was Moose Creek rapids. This is the only spot for concern on the whole trip. It can be a class II+ to Class III- rapid. There is an island that separates the river with the rapids on either side. We choose the left side which looked like the lesser of the two evils. Lots of rocks and ledges here to be avoided. I was able to avoid some but paddling by myself hitting a couple was unavoidable.
Calm before the storm
Stopped on some rocks to check out the rapids
