I would not trust myself to take care of a rifle like that. I am jealous of that rig.

I thought you said grey laminate. That doesn't look like either. Absolutely lovely rifle though. I would hesitate to ever buy such a rig as I'd be too scared to use it, get it scratched, etc. Laminate or composite for me on any rifle that isn't ging to be a safe queen.

Yaa I think I didn't really word it right....My first 257Wby was a Grey laminate\stainless...I sold it when I was 20 years old....no idea where it's at now. This new wood\blued 257 WBY is straight from weatherbys shop.I ordered on remembrance day last Year, and I finally just got it....it's for sure going to get scratched in the bush

Nice piece of lumber on that rig WTJ! I love my .257 too. I know the feeling of selling one, I sold my 270 Wby 20 years ago and am still kicking myself. One of these days I'm ordering another one for sure!

So that's a brand new rifle you say. Now that you've had a good chance to look it over, what's your opinion on the fit and finish of the American made MkV Deluxe compared to the older Jap and German MkV Deluxes? Assuming of course that you have had experience with the older ones.
Beautiful rifle by the way!

Hey that is great wood on your Ultramark. If you decide to shoot another deer and then sell it, look me up.

To tell you the truth...I like the "skip-line" checkering better on the older weatherbys, the fit is about the same from what I can see with my Japan, german and italian weatherby's.The finish I think was done better back in the day, even though I've heard that some 1980's or so weatherby's finish is cracking.

I'm partial to skip line checkering too. The blueing on the German and Jap models is hard to beat, that's why I asked. I don't care for the bead blasted finish on the American made ones but it's a sign of the times, it's easier and cheaper than the polishing involved for attaining the deep, deep blue jobs that were so popular a few years ago. It's all about keeping the manufacturing cost down so the MSRP is competitive these days.
The varnish finishes of a few years ago do crack. Not badly and you have to look close to see it but crack they do. You can all but make the cracks go away with rubbing oil into them though, especially if you thin it a bit. I think the newer oil finishes are better.
I'm looking forward to a range report!
