Marlin Model 1895 GBL Lever Action Rifle
O.k I have a new rifle picked out as per the title (45/70). I would like to pick your brains for optics. I was thinking a 2-7 power scope say a Redfield but...? Also a custom leather cartridge holder and sling....?
Wanted one for many years and finally held one, worked the action, shouldered it etc just would like to see what other folks have gone with.

I have a Marlin 1895 CB in 45/70 with the 26" octagon barrel. I didn't want to put a scope on it but my eyes are not what they used to be. I ended up putting a VX2 2-7 on it.

I have two .45/70's. One is an older Marlin lever and I use an older 1.5 - 4.
On the Ruger #1 that I shoot high pressure 350gr bullets out of I have a 4 - 12.
So I suspect a 2 - 7 would serve you very well.

I had the 1895CB also
Mine had Williams peep sights for a spell, then a Cabelas Leverevolution scope and exclusively used Hornady leverevolution ammo.
The scope/ammo combination did as promised, sighted at 100, gave accurate aim points for 200 & 300

Mine isn't a 45/70, it's a .444 Marlin. But pretty close. I have it scoped with a 1.5-4 Bausch & Lomb. I suspect that this would be a good magnification range for yours also.

Mine's an sbl. It has the xs sights rail and I use a burris 2.75 fixed scout on it. Shooting 150 yards is a breeze with both eyes open.

I always liked the scout scope on an SBL, it seems to allow for better long range shots while still allowing a wide field of view when you need it in bear country.

1972 Marlin 444S. Pretty much the same platform. Last year i ran a period correct Japanese made Tasco 1-3.5x20 in low Weaver rings. Currently have a period correct Weaver K4 on it that i used for load development and may keep that on it now...

On my short range rifles I like the Leupold VX-2 1-4 power or VX-3 1.5-5
on 1X it gives a wide field of view even at 10 yards and has enough power for the bench
