Default Restricted question

I just got my course done last night finally. Question I had was that I need to belong to a range to get transport papers if I am correct. I had researched here previous and I had a guy tell me of a range in BC that was real cheap to join so I could get my transport papers for my gun but I was told last night that I could only basically transport my pistols within Alberta and needed licenses to take out of province therefore making a range membership in BC useless.

Is there a cheap range in Alberta to join is my question and another is what do you guys need to transport out of province if going somewhere and want to take your pistols with you to shoot at a range in other provinces?

May be dumb questions but it's all new to me and I don't feel like getting tossed in jail or wasting my time trying to figure out what is right or wrong.

Next step will be getting my concealed permit to carry on my trapline and I imagine that is a crazy process after the research I have done

Is that even possible? I would think they'd think there is absolutely no reason you need to conceal your firearm when walking in the bush along a trapline.

Make sure the Range you join is certified by CFO for restricted use.

There is a reason for a hand gun carry permit and there are two authorizations available , one for small bore hand guns and another for big bore hand guns .
Why they are CCW instead of open carry is a mystery however

Does the AHEIA have a range approved for restricted firearms?
Where is it?

If you want to transport to another province, you will need to call the CFO and get an ATT.

Transporting within the province you can do without a paper att once the special conditions are applied to your license, which will have after you buy your first restricted.

You can get associate memberships at places like the shooters edge or Calgary shooting centre that meet the requirements. I'm sure you can get this at other similar stores/ranges for varying prices. I would go with what ever one is cheapest 30$ for one is a good price. I wish I would have heard about that deal a few years ago before I got a range membership. Is there a link for AHEIA google shows it in dewinton.

The range near Caroline is the Alford Lake camp where they do the hunter training camps in summer for the kids. They have a range there that is approved for restricted. It is my understanding that as an aheia member you can use the range but you need to phone ahead to make sure there is availability (which I don't think it often is).

Truthfully you won't be able to shoot there much as it's used with camp events, but the membership will meet the requirement

You won't get a concealed carry permit. You can get a ATC for dispatch. It is a simple process actually.

X2

Just bought a handgun (not my first, but first since the new rules) and the lady at the firearms program was very helpful. Once you have the license that notes the special attached conditions, you are free to travel to any firearms store, police station, border crossing, CFO approved range, appraiser, registered gunsmith, I think there are a few more, without the ATT. I understood that there is no such thing as an ATT in Alberta with the new licenses, as your license is your authorization to take your restricted firearm anywhere where it could conceivably be taken (other than a friends house etc.). On that phone call she immediately issued me a new license and it came two weeks later, with the attached conditions.

If you're gonna apply for your dispatch ATC, you might want to get some clarification on when you can carry it. There is a gray area about carrying it on your snowmobile and quad because it is deemed a motor vehicle. It can and would be a pita if you had to go thru the all the bs of trigger locking, ammo storage and in a locked case. It'll all depend on the officer stopping you weather he'll take it away or not. Most of the f&w officers I've talked to have never heard of a ATC and some of them don't figure we should have one. IMO every farmer, trapper or person that works in the wild should apply. It might send the powers that be a message and in time bring about a wilderness carry permit.

For sure thanks.
Considering i had 3 Grizz on my porch this year in December and 1 black bear in the summer and poking their heads in my outhouse I figure I should see what i can do to have it with me at all times.

I'm sure there is a range in Edmonton, get off your wallet and buy a membership. You can afford all those fancy hunting trips I'm sure you can afford a range membership and if not take one less trip!!!

The problem is as a trapper you're limited to a 22. Unfortunately. If you would like pm me your phone number and I could discuss this further with you.

I was told ad a trapper we are limited to 22 for dispatch but a larger caliber for protection. There was some wording as to where you were, and could only have one gun on your body at a given time (the other had to be locked away on quad or sled)

But it did sound like this was certainly possible.

DVC ventures down here is one that has a deal.
I have copied the info below from their website.

"A.T.T. Membership $50 (tax included)

This option gets you a membership to a gun club that will then allow you to purchase restricted firearms and transport them. This is set up for those who do not plan to shoot on a regular basis but still want to purchase firearms. This membership does NOT allow you usage of the range facilities or the range firearms. This is not a range membership, public hours and drop in fee of $30 apply"

Might be possible but I'm allowed two on my ATC for work purposes (farm and contactor). I can only be in possession of one at a time. The guy I talked to about having it in my holster when on I quad or skidoo said it is a grey area and it'll mostly depend on the attitude and mood of the officer. I'm unsure how this works on private land. The nice thing is I can take my pistol to the other corner of Alberta and wear it if I'm working. Fixing your fence, building you a driveway. Lol.
You can also get a interprovincial ATC but in nubes case I don't think it'll work unless hes got a trapline is in two provinces.

Forgot to add that my understanding is that .22 for dispatch and 357 sig or larger for protection. They also recommend a double action 41 mag but that might be just the guy that gave me a 2hr interview opinion.

Nope you can have a dispatch gun as well as one for bear defence but the bear gun had to be of a certain size. I know people that have both as trappers. I will have to ask some questions when i apply but it should not be an issue to only carry one or the other anyways most times. If I am trapping then most times the bears will be sleeping.

Good luck and let us know how you make out. I'd be surprised if you get one for anything other than dispatch. Hope you prove me wrong.

Seems to me you are in the north part of the province, with that you can go to Phoenix gun range and get the associate membership (maybe Wild West too) that will satisfy the requirements. My understanding is the membership is for possession of restricted. You are either a collector or a shooter. As a shooter you prove that by being a member of a range/club - if you aren't a shooter then there is a different set of rules for collectors but I don't know any more than that.
It isn't tied to transport papers as such rather it is tied to ownership, the att has been replaced by added conditions to your licence so no more phoning for an att to go to the range or gunsmith or whatever. I think (not sure) you will need a permit to take a restricted outside the province.

I found that hand delivering my ATC application seemed to speed it up. If I recall I was having my phone interview within 10 days.

Still waiting on my Restricted Pal. What a slow process!
Thanks for all the info guys.
Ramcrazy, there is a range. It's full the first day it opens to become a member I found out this year. Also it costs a lot of money for the odd time I would get out there. Why would I pay a lot of money for something that is not going to be used and I can get what I want cheaper? I am sure you would make a great businessman!
I have been given a lot of good ideas guys thanks.
Soon as I get the restricted RPAL I will purchase and start the process to be able to carry on my trapline. I will let you know how it goes. Got a few people I know that have it done and carry both for defence and for dispatch......

I'm doing this right now. I need to get one for the 22 for dispatch in the winter and then go through all the BS again to get one for protection in the summer. Go figure.
