300 vs. 338

I just purchased .300 win mag and .338 win mag. I have to make a decision which one to keep.
Which one is heavier on recoil?

I've never met a 300 that wasn't plain ol ignorant. This includes 300 rum, 300 wby, 300 win and 308 Norma mag. Only 338 I've had a problem with was one of those ruger canoe paddle ones. It wasn't nice at all. The 2 338 win and the 338 rum I've got are surprisingly pleasant to shoot.

imo it depends on weight and length of pull,the better the fit will reduce felt recoil,im really starting to love my 338 rum over my 3oo's

A 338 with light bullets is very comparable to a 300 in trajectory out to 500 or so yards depending on bullet. After 500 yards the 300 out performs the 338. The 338 is usually more than enough for realistic hunting ranges and still fairly flat shooting. A 338 can shoot heavy bullets with authority like a 375 h&h. I never even bothered with a 300 win mag, in my eyes it's a little more speed than a 300wsm or 30-06. If you want a 30 caliber to perform then get a rum for long range. I am no long range shooter, I don't have a problem with long range hunting, there is just no interest from me in practicing that much. I have a 30-06, a 338 win mag and a 375 h&h. The 338 is my most used rifle, it likes 210 ttsx. Shoot your 338, see if it fits well, see if the recoil is tolerable and go put meat in your freezer.

I have a 300 weatherby and 338 WM. Recoil is pretty similar between the two. 338 is a bit more though with 250 gr bullets. I'm not sure I'd pick one over the other based just on recoil though; especially since they're both similar.

You just need to pick speed or energy. Then muzzle break it if kicks to hard. I prefer a 300 with a break. My other partner is a 338 no break guy. You should just keep both.

The 300 will kick way harder than a 338 which is more of a push than a kick. Had a 300, shoot a 338 now!!

Jeepers, take them to the range and bang away, find out what you like and I will give you 100 bucks for the one you don't keep.

The 338 should smack ya harder but it all depends on the rifle, how it fits ya etc.

I have a heavier "long range" .300, before braking it you certainly knew you touched off a round with heavier pills like the 208gr Amax. It is much more pleasant to shoot braked, but extremely loud and not as range friendly.

If recoil is an issue in a hunting weight rig, go with a 30-06 or 270; depending on what you intend to hunt the 7-08 and 6.5x55 might be a good option as well.

You never mentioned if both of these rifles are the the same make and model.
If they are, then the fit and weight should be the same, shoot both and make your own decision.
If they aren't, shoot both and make your own decision, based on fit, and which one feels better.

If these rifles are your first big game rifles, you definitely, jumped into the deeper end of the pool for recoil. Alot of experienced shooters agree that both these cartridges are on the outer level of comfort.

If you can handle the recoil from one, you should be able to handle both, as you probably wont be able to tell the real world difference between the two.
