Default 2010 Late Season Suffield Elk

Well i got my Suffield elk. When i was drawn, i set my sights on a 350+ bull. Went down the day before the season opened, was fairly dry, and easy to get around. Just before daylight ended it started to snow, great sign, was hoping the weather was gonna get snarly. I had great permission for the opening two days on a big ranch bordering the base. Opening morning was windy and snowy. I backpacked in to where i could see thru the sandhills for opening light. Found a herd of 100 elk, and about half of them were off the base. Got within 250 yds of the closest cow. There were a couple bulls around 400, none i liked. Second day was a blizzard...No elk off the base on the ranch i was on...150 head 500 yards inside the base. By the time i was back to the truck, i looked like a snowman! did some scouting and spotting for the rest of the day, no luck. Back to work for part of a week. Had the next 2 weeks off dedicated to getting a bull. Left work in N. Alberta and arrived down there by 10 pm. Stopped in to see a friend who had gotten his bull that day...was a beauty...id say close to 400!! Got to the ranch i was staying at by 1am. Up early and into the grazing lease at first light...drifted snow everywhere, saw lots of Mulies, no elk, and got stuck half a dozen times...not fun when you are by yourself!!! Went in for fuel and got a little tip of where some elk had been leaving the base in the aft. Went to the spot late in the afternoon, sure enough there were some bulls off the base. Spotted them for a long time...almost was gonna shoot a 6x6 which i figured aroung the 365ish mark, but decided to pass, since i had lots of time off. Spotted some more bulls with about 45 mins left in the day...saw a non typical which i liked from a distance. Did a quick sneak, got within range...thought to myself...non typical, looks very cool...the drifted snow and getting stuck made my mind up...he was in an easy spot, why not...broadside at 340...2 shots, he went and bedded 25yds away...snuck in closer, 1 finishing shot in the neck...time to get to work!!
The field photos arent the greatest, i was by myself and daylite was burnin fast, and had a few hours work to do...
I gutted him, halfed him front and back, skinned out the hinds, ...ratchet straps used as a winch had him loaded, back to the ranch where i was staying...caped out the fronts in the back of the truck and opened the neck to let it cool, and the rest is history...12:30 am, half wore out!!!..Was a great year for elk in Suffield...met some great people, saw lots of pics of great bulls killed in the last season with the cold weather.
A note of thanks to all (you know who you are) the folks who emailed, phoned, send pics, talked to me, offered me information etc etc...the outdoors community is very helpful!! I dont need to mention names, they are to numerous to list, and i would be worried i would forget one or two anyways!! Thanks to all

Enjoy the pics...i think he is gonna make a beauty mount...!!!

I do have a rough score on him...let me know what you think he goes...he is a 9x7 NT...

Toe

What a pig; congrats and thanks for sharing the story and pictures. I have no idea what it would go but all guess 398" but I think I might be low.

awesome bull! Can't believe how patient you were. I would have been shooting at the first 350+ bull I saw. How did you pass on 400 inch bulls??? I have known about the area for a long time and have been building up my priority - can't wait for my chance!!! Congratulations.

I've been waiting for this post!

Right on Toe! That one will do..LOL..

Did I read that right?

You passed on a 400 bull because you didn't like him.

Congrats on a great Bull, you earned him.

I'll guess on the score after talking to you...

Re-reading your story those "couple of bulls around 400" may have been 400 yards not 400 inches??? Regardless, you held out for a bruiser!!

when i said there were a couple around 400...i meant yards in that sentence...i see why you are questioning me...haha...they were only scored about 300 or just above..400 inches...down they would go!!

Since you asked, its a heck of a tough guess for me but I'd say that theres gotta be a good chance that bull scores over 410" gross. Heck I may be off but I'll say 414" gross.
