Default Moon phase

What’s everyone’s opinion on animals movement during a full moon? More daytime activity or less? I’ve been trying to figure it out with my own experience but have had contradicting results. I’ll be out there regardless of the results just wondering what others have experienced. Thanks

There was just a thread on this.

In short, science (specifically GPS collar studies) has proven the moon doesn’t change a damn thing for big game. Lots of old guys will swear up and down it changes everything though, and can’t understand their anecdotal experiences don’t matter or prove anything. Don’t waste your time worrying about it.

They move at night because they can see farther distances. when there is no moon they can’t see so they bed at night and move more in the day. But in the rut bucks will be chasing does around day and night.

That’s silly talk that animals would be more active with more ambient light in the night time...

I suspect 3blade is referring to a recent thread where I asked a quite similar question. Here's the link:

Predators spend more time in the open/fields during a full moon and prey spends more time in cover.
Prove me wrong.

My deer fields can confirm this. With the snow and the full moon they have switched to being virtually nocturnal. I wasn’t expecting that since I had been reading how moon phase doesn’t affect activity. I can see that the deer had pawed away the snow to feed on alfalfa, I believe 20-30 deer were in the field that night.

Interesting to note, is that on the last full moon when there was no snow there was no significant change in their behaviours.

So I think snow is the xfactor in full moon activity. With the snow I could see the deer in the fields on the drive home no problem, so I imagine they are opting for that with the hunting pressure on.

It’s okay deer; we will wait the moon out

I have had good luck during the full moon, however all the deer I shot on the full moon I got closer to mid day.
Probably just coincidence but that's my experience.

I will go with my eyes and trail cams along with almost 30years of hunting Full moons suck especially clear nights. I will still hunt and have taken animals during a full moon but I do notice a difference.

Those who don’t agree I don’t care what you read I will stick with firsthand experience and success.

Everyone has opinions and theories go with whatever works for you

Default moon

How many times have you not eaten supper when their was no moon. Animals eat every day. I know my horses do not wait for full moon before they eat their hay. However barometric pressure changes before storm does seem to affect their feeding habits.

They don’t stop moving, go on vacation, or get teleported by aliens but I have noticed a difference in timing they choose to move. Trail cams that are 90% daylight movement see a big increase in night pics and decrease in daylight pics. I also notice daylight movement focused even more so to the first 2 hrs and last hour of light. Outside of full moons I get way more mid day movement between 10-2 and less night movement on my cams. I have also had more success throughout the day instead of restricted to first and last light

I hunt transition areas in crown land back in the bush not farms or feeding areas where movement is often already restricted to first and last light.

This has been my observation say what you want but I won’t ignore an on going trend. I have experienced this in many different areas over the years from both cams and firsthand experience

There is a ton of other things that change movement as well but go with whatever you see with the animal you hunt

Waidmannsdank is much more than a superstition.
It is Tradition and Respect.

Really surprised that you would diss this....

I called it superstition. Like many things people do that have no effect on outcome, other than comfort in a belief.

And if that belief system provides someone with any form of comfort or appeasement, Im all for it. Ill stand by and wait if someone has a particular thing that they do as part of their belief system. Im in no rush. I dont partake but I dont interfere either.

I have no traditions. Never was exposed to nor developed any. So perhaps my bluntness stems from that. Ive never understood lighting a candle in someone’s memory either....I admit to being ignorant in regards to these things.

Im just not convinced that, in doing so, that there is any basis in fact.

No offence intended. Just one guys view and honest thought.
