Even entry level flashers like the Marcum VX1 or Humminbird Ice 35 for $400 would be much more capable flashers but they lack any other capability(gps etc).

This unit will get the job done though especially since it is your first unit. Being able to use it on your boat is a benefit too.

yea....from no sonar to this.....should be ok.....i prefer the digital screen to the traditional flashers....this unit just has sooooo many more features then the ice 35.......well we will see!!!!!

Just so you know Showdown is a Marcum product too.

I tried out a number of units last year. Had bad luck with a few. I think I had a lemon magnet in my back pocket or something. Took Dean2's recommendation for the Vexilar FL8 SE. It is a bulletproof unit that gets the job done. There are some with more bells and whistles, but I am certain none are more time tested or reliable.

I usually try not to be forthright, but take that thing back and get a real flasher.

But thanks for your concern.
Have only heard positive things about the one I purchased.....i especially like that my unit has depth charts.....just soooooo many more features then the fl-8
