Default Special Whitetail Buck

I always enjoy seeing the deer other people are fortunate enough to take, so thought I would share this special deer. I could tell a long story, but will try to keep it short. A friend and I have been making trips for Whitetails for a number of years. Those trips have been tough with struggles in finding huntable areas, good deer numbers, etc. We had a nice area for a couple of years, and then wolves moved in and deer numbers fell. Last year we found a new area and made plans to return this fall. Our 9 days of hunting turned out to be very challenging. We spent almost all days in the timber, dawn to dusk trying to figure out where the deer were moving. We found sign, and felt there was a good number of deer in the area but we hit the lockdown phase of the rut (something we are beginning to believe more and more in), and not much movement. Many days we saw 0, or 1-2 deer. But we kept scouting and hunting, piecing together the sign we saw to understand the deer in that area. Close to the end of the hunt I had a doe sneak past me at 35 yards in the timber, followed by this tremendous buck. Thankfully he was that close as I might not have been able to hold it together, and make a good shot, had he been further! My biggest Whitetail, and a very special deer. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

We were prepared to quarter him up (back in the timber quite a ways), but decided to bring him out in the sled. The first picture was shortly after I got him. The second was when I had returned with the sled. Then the work started.... It was all worth it!

It can be tough to stick with things, but we found the sign and felt confident in how we were hunting. Plus, for my hunting partner and myself, there is almost nothing better than scouting and hunting Whitetails in the big timber.

As for score, I have put a tape to him to get to a rough score. I tried to be accurate, but there is a slight chance I may have given him a slight benefit of the doubt on a few questionable measurements(!). But, I did try to be accurate. Rather than give my exact score, I'll just say he gross scores over 200". A monster in my books!
