Default Ditch Parrot-ise

Lefty-Canuck rolled through this part of alberta for work. he thought he might get wrapped up early enough on his last day that he might be able to get a chance to try to slay a pheasant for the first time ever.

well, i have been out hunting every day this week including a short trip for antelope. my dogs have been running hard, and wouldnt you know it.....my best boy that hunts the hardest tore up a foot the night before. i gave him the day off and took the youngest dudue out solo for the first time. he impressed me. its the best work he has done on upland birds yet. he is a duck maniac, but until yesterday hasnt been overly awesome with the roosters.

we lined up access to a primo chunk of creek bottom that i know is always a stronghold for pheasants even in the toughest years. access here is VERY limited which helps too. heck even i get the cold shoulder form time to time, but this time we were in like flynn.

it didnt take long for LC to line up and knock down his very first pheasant ever. for those that dont know.....trophy birds are considered to be a B&C equivalent at around 40 inches, or 40 bars. LCs first bird came in at 38 bars, and 38 3/8 inches.

we walked a few miles of creek telling stories the whole way. we got into a few more birds, but none to add to the bag yet. we looked at each other with anticipation when we heard geese in the sky. LC spotted them first and we could see they were coming over us and low. he asked if i had any steel on me. i did and tossed him one and rammed one in my own gun. one shot each was all we had, and the result was two canadas falling from the sky. that was a bonus we did not expect.

anyhow, after pounding some more willow choked waterways, LC picked up his second bird and we called it a day. always good to see guys getting out to try something new.

Thanks again for the introduction to that style of hunting! Looking forward to doing it again...I have to make sure I don't get my finger caught in the pump action slide again....that really hurts!

Was a great time, can't wait to cook up those birds.

Lol, you noticed the head shot did you? That was actually where most the damage was.

the shot id guess was at 20 yards. no doubt the majority of that load hit the head. i cleaned them for him, and that bird had no pellets at all in the back as he was flying straight away.

I think the forum bad language filter must be down. No ****! LOL

I figured those Lefty and game pics were photo-shopped. The real pics and story of his visit are on a "different" sort of forum, it appears. In fact you should be able to read Bambi's letter next month.

Nice job guys, you have me drooling again, as I am thinking about my retirement, when I will be able to spend my fall days traveling around the country, with my loyal pointer looking to find the places where those wild birds live.

That's a nice looking bird!

ISB looked at the first one I shot and he said that's a good bird....like a really good bird!

I had no idea that you could measure and judge a trophy quality of a pheasant.
Really enjoyed doing something I have never done before and watching the dogs was a blast too....the way those things can run and hide is nothing short of amazing.

All this pheasant talk, I figured I would bump an old thread. Hope to maybe sneak down to get a few more birds sometime soon!

Looks like a great hunt. Congrats. I really look forward to measuring a Pheasant from a release site. I'm told the wild ones are larger.

These ones were wild and they were in really good shape. I have heard the released ones can be pretty beat up at times.

Great birds. These conversations are quite funny from the outside. We have shot a pile of pheasants both "wild" and released. I have seen "wild" and released birds in poor to good shape. I have seen 40"+ birds with no daylight in their nostrils and some with daylight. Smart "wild" birds and others standing on the road.
Enjoy the hunt and enjoy the birds. They were all released at one point
