I have never hunted bears but I've shot more then I care to remember, mostly in late summer to early fall.
As the berry crops dwindle the bears around here head for the fields. Oats seems to be a favorite but they will hit Wheat and Peas too.
They can do a lot of damage plus they wind up in peoples yards and either way, more often then not, the only recourse is to shoot the darned pests.
I have eaten fall bear, in fact I was taught that it is the only time they are good eating. I can't verify that because I've never eaten a bear shot at any other time of year.
It think Bear Grease could have had something to do with the logic behind hunting them in the fall.
Fifty years ago Bear grease was a valuable commodity among some of our neighbors. And of course, fall would be the best time if one wanted Bear Grease.
Funny thing, I know where there is a ten pound pail of Bear Grease that is at least forty years old, and although it smells rancid, it looks like it would still work for a lot of it's original uses.
