Default Early moose hunt success

We arrived at moose camp Sept 23which seemed a few days early but with our work schedule that was our best option to go.
Our first morning out started off slow ,not hearing any responses to our moose calls. Things were pretty quiet that morning. We went out that afternoon and not having any luck we decided to start making our way back to camp. We decided to try calling in a spot along a creek edge not far from camp. After an hour of a few lonely cow calls we still weren't getting any response. Hmmmmm You start to wonder if maybe next week would have been better for calling. Lol. None the less you make the best of it. So 1/2hr before dark I grabbed the moose antler I was packing and decided to work a willow tree not far off the cutline.
Instantly we got a response from a bull. Holy cow "Game on" As we both Slam a shell in the gun. Few soft cow calls and we had a meat bull standing out on the cutline. Meat bull down. Pressure was off. Meat hanging in camp on day one of our 5 day hunt.

The next 3 days were uneventful as the weather turned warm with strong winds making it very poor conditions for calling moose. Never heard a peep. Now down to our last morning to hunt we got "Frost" and the wind had died. Perfect conditions.
We decided to head into an area we had called in a few days prior. Fresh moose sign in the area made it look very promising. On our way in we spot a fresh moose scrape/pit in the middle of the cutline that wasn't there 2 days before. Absolutely Perfect. We set up and start calling every half hour and after 4 long hours we never got a a response. It's now noon and haven't heard a thing. Any other day we would usually head for camp and have lunch but with such a perfect calm morning and the fresh rut pit we decided to stick it out. Few more moose calls later and at 1pm we hear a snap , seconds later a bull grunt 40-50 yds in the bush. We barely had time to chamber a round. Within a few seconds a bull moose appears trotting in our direction , head shaking as his rack was getting hung up on willows as he pushed closer to our position. At 25 yds he stops for a quick look. That's all it took we had a 44" beauty down. No better feeling then to be "Tagged out"
What a trip and will go down as one of the most memorable moose hunts to date. I'm feeling very thankful to live in Alberta and be able to enjoy an early successful moose hunt.

Thought I'd share a few pics from our trip. Enjoy.

Patience pays off always when calling. It's amazing how quiet an animal that big can be. Nice moose. Thanks for sharing.

It's not clear who your partner was, but congrats to both of you. 2 nice bulls on one trip is great. How far did you have to hike packing out that head and meat? That head and rack alone must have weighed close to 200 lbs.
Great story, great pics.

I love your pose in picture one. You must be iron man. Packing out the head and horns on your back is a awkward heavy load and your just enjoying the sunset like its not even back there.

Congrats on a Nice moose

Default Thanks.

Thanks for the replays much appreciated.

No better feeling then to be tagged out. Moose meat is by far one of my favorites. Heading on a BC mountain goat hunt last week of October hope my luck continues. 🍻
