Default Platinum F-350 tailgate stolen

Just a heads up my 2015 F-350 Platinum tailgate was stolen 3 morning ago, daughter wakes me up at 1:30am saying someone is in the back of my truck, so I race out to the truck but I was about 20 seconds late from catching the POS, talked with Ford and replacement of the tailgate will be about 9000$, that does not include the damage done to my truck cap back window that they damaged to get the tailgate down, I would have loved to catch them and so would have my dogs!!!!, make sure to lock your tailgates and be safe out there it's getting flipping crazy

doesn't surprise me at all after they get it painted, but aftermarket tailgates are a lot cheaper.

Just the platinum piece across the back of it is $2200. Ask my wife how I know.

My new work truck has power locks in the tail gate because they're so expensive and easy to steal. It's a great idea I never thought about.

I put a hose clamp on the end that lifts up so that tailgate is hard to remove unless you have a screwdriver. I think that is enough to make most thieves move onto something else. $9000 for a tailgate? Now we know who the real thieves are.

Sounds like they may be gold from the galaxy Zargon which is several million light years away. The tailgate is cheap it's the shipping that kills you.

Exactly how do you steal a locked tailgate? (cap or no cap)

And if it wasn't locked, WTF??

3 weeks ago someone did the same to our company cube van. Boss has a cam outside. Guy was wearing a hoodie so no clear pic. He said it took less than 2 minutes . Cost him $1600 to replace it.
Same truck in the last year got broken into , fuel line cut and gas siphoned two other times.

Sorry to hear about your tailgate. That sounds really expensive for a tailgate.
My old bosses' tailgate off his 3/4 2004 Dodge was $2G I think when it got lifted right in front of his house.

Was at a Ford dealership about 4 years ago. I asked the salesman how come 6 of their trucks had no end gates. He said what do you mean. I said look. Sure enough some pecker head stole them the night before.

So are these Ford tailgates really that easy to steal? When my tailgate is locked, a person would have to remove all the screws and then the access cover to disable the lock to remove the tailgate.

Wouldn't surprise me, when I did them a few years ago it was $5- $6000. Not just the tailgate, Don't forget the $2200 platinum moulding(no its not made of platinum but for the price it should be) , inside access panel cover, ford emblems and f1-350 emblem, tailgate cap, Handle and lock, Camera in the handle assembly, wiring for the power tailgate and power tailgate spring and dampner assembly and power lock mechanism, the pullout step assembly, and the labour and paint materials to paint and put this all together and install.

For $9000 I would be looking for a hydra-deck. I don't know what they're worth new but sure would be handy.

I guess since they don't fall apart there isn't a lot of demand for them.

No just bust the outside handle cover and pull the two rods together, voilla open the tailgate.
Manufacturers have made things very expensive, complicated and very costly to replace yet easy for thieves to steal all the while selling its security features. They love this and enjoy the billions of dollars in sales selling replacements and all the parts they put in them. They are overly complicated for a reason, it's a great marketing strategy.

A: Most truck tailgates come off in less than 20 seconds. (Tested by myself and a buddy). If unlocked - took us 17 seconds with a screwdriver.

https://youtu.be/VB8i2O0dy9M
https://youtu.be/54jTus2HMiM
https://youtu.be/4xK2Ld5zds4

When I bought my truck new - I heard the price to replace the tailgate with the step and stripper pole and camera (Upwards of $5000-6000) - so in the event I BYCHANCE forgot to lock my gate - I searched and found this:

Masterlock Tailgate lock $20.
https://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-8.../dp/B007OSL3DY

Even bought one for a buddy for his F350. Same fitment.

Only thing I may do is upgrade to a slightly heavier duty one if needed (some competitors have different locks but more $$$)

When you buy high end trucks and some thing goes missing expect to pay or make a claim,if there going to steal a tail gate that some body shop needs they go for the top end stuff.

I put up cameras outside in my drive way, plus at every entrance of the house, plus a backup inside. If you can afford the truck security is peanuts. If you can hide the camera at your drive way entrance, this way you get a call to alert you inside right away, make sure its high enough for dogs or cats.
If you have long drive way like a mile hide one near the entrance,so you can see exactly who is on your property and not endanger your self, why forfeit your well being over something that can be replaced, scaring them before they know it is much safer.
With these new pot deals coming in the organized crime will find other methods to make up the balance,so more harder drugs cheaper to acquire = more hard core addicts and the stealing and other crimes will just increase to fill the addicts need for money to supply the thugs who they have to pay.

Just to add to how many pos's are running around. My wife took my truck to work last Wed. She works at a bank on crowchild in Calgary. So 11 am she goes out to the truck to leave for a meeting. Finds a rocks been thrown through my window. The only thing missing, her sunglasses. 140 bucks. Window, 330, towtruck,220(she couldnt drive it as there was too much glass) window tint 120.
Cant have anything nice anymore. Ida liked to have caught the person.
Pic enclosed. Btw, police were not interested. File a report online, have a nice day.
