I would buy a savage Axis II at cabelas with the 10% off they have today. Price is 509.99 plus there is a 50$ mail in rebate.

I would use the gun as is until bass pro has their scope trade in days. I would then upgrade my scope to a better scope of your choice. Can usually have a trade in value of 100$ and pick up a Leupold VX-2 or 3.

I would also bring a receipt or thin paper with me for purchase and make sure there barrel isn't touching the stock. I have shot 2 Axis II and there was no issue with the stock in relation to the gun functioning. They are cheap but a boyds is a cheap replacement if looks matter.

The 223 and 243 where both sub MOA at 100 with factory ammo and guns had no improvements on them. The scope and action screw where under torqued and tightened before a trip to the range.

Thanks for the advice! Would you recommend a vortex diamond back scope on a savage 2? I already have a newer diamondback in 3-9 x 40

You could use either scope, the riffles I shot were just the factory scopes. I know lots of guys wouldn't even consider a savage axis good enough to spit on but luckily game isn't picky about what it's getting shot with.

The guns I shot are not mine and it was only 1 trip to the range where it was about 10 degrees out. I am not sure if there would be issues with the scopes in really cold weather and fogging or how well they do in moisture. I am sure the vortex would work but I have no experience with that scope.

If the rifle is in good shape, and still shooting true, you would get two thumbs up from me!!! This would be a better choice then the axis, specially since there is endless upgrades to the Rem 700
