It is too bad Hornady doesn't load the 178 in the Precision Hunter ammo line for the 300 WM. I can't believe how accurate that load is out of my 308 Win. I couldn't possibly improve my performance by loading for it.

Look up some 180gr data , use that to determine a starting load, and work up from there.

Volume 10 Hornady book.

H4350

Minimum is 58.0gr @ 2600 ish ft-per second
Max in Red is 67.9gr @ 2900 ish ft-per second.

They say that the best "normal" results for the "heavy bullets" for 300 Win Mag is RL-22 or IMR 7828 for cases that size using a 25" too 26" barrel.

H-4831 is also shows good results in larger cases,,, it is a bit slower burn rate then H 4350.

My old Weatherby Mag liked this powder.

All the above powders suggested will work good for the 178gr bullets on up.

Don

Edit added: If you are ever planning too shoot the medium size bullets from let's say 150gr, 165,and heavier too the 200gr ish then H 4350 fits that category better than H-4831.

If your plan is too shoot 178gr on up too 225gr rock chuckers and never return too the medium lighter bullets,,, then one might stick with H-4831.

Just putting out some ideas for you to choose from.

I know it's not the bullet you asked about. But why shoot such a light bullet out of a 300 Win Mag? I would look into the 212 or the Berger 215 Hybrid. Also H1000 is my go to powder in the 300 Win Mag. I get 3000 fps out of my full custom with H1000 and 215 Bergers. It is a very hard combo to beat. Especially if shooting WAY out there. If your shots will be close you may want to look into a tougher bullet than the ELD-X. Some reports of not great performance up close. It is designed as a long range bullet to expand at lower velocities. I have no experience with the ELD-X so as I said just going with what guys are saying on other forums. A 178 gr at 300 Win Mag velocities could be very EXPLOSIVE up close.

Would a 210 Berger vld be good to try? If so would you still say H1000 powder for that?

You could try the 210, but I would shoot the 215's. They have a better BC and less bearing surface. Also are hybrid design so load development in super easy. Start them at 30 thou off and work up to pressure. Have done this in a few 300 Win Mags and all have shot half MOA or less. With less bearing surface you will also get more speed with the 215 than you will a 210. But as I said earlier, if shots are all going to be close I would choose a bonded bullet. I have only shot deer with the 215's at 500 to 734 yds. All dropped at the shot. Incredible performance.

The 190g vld has worked very well for me in the past with a stout load of rl22
Running the 212g eld-x now and a stout load of rl22 also very accurate load

If you choose to run the eld-x I found although they are not suppose to be sensitive to seating depth they were very much so in my rifle bergers method of finding the optimum coal worked well for me
