Early season fly fishing
New to getting into some serious fly fishing this season. Wondering how early is plausible to get out?
Anyone know of anywhere (preferably a cpl hrs from edmonton) That a guy could get out to this weekend?
EDIT: I know most all waterbodies are closed aside from stocked

Define "serious"!
Ice on the Edmonton area trout lakes is starting to rot and melt from the edges but I think this weekend my be optimistic. You might want to have a look at Hasse Lake though 'cause the aerators are not that far from the boat launch area.

There are some rivers and streams that are open right now. 2-2.5 hrs from Edmonton. Time to get out and explore some water, that would be the serious part.

I went out on the weekend with some hope which was dashed. Everything I visited was locked tight for streams. First time I've had no options. And, ended up at Hasse ... haha!
Said to my buddy that is the longest trip to Hasse ever when I clocked in at about 700 km traveled just to get to Hasse.
And Hasse we caught nothing. Lots of open water to cast to due to aeration. The water is off color. Tried a lot of flies and lures. Oh well, still nice to cast to some open water.

700 km??? You must have gone from Red Deer to the Forestry Trunk, checking the lakes in the Caroline area, then back through below Hinton and Edson, then maybe checking out Millers and East Pond on the way to Stony Plain...just guessing.
Hasse has been murky/poor visibility the last few years now...spring, summer, fall. What's the deal: bird guano, aeration, vegetation, farm runoff ???

Yesterday 2.5 hr drive took me from St. Albert to Clearwater and Raven. Best I did was scare 2 nice fish on the Raven. Cut away several leaders due to tangles caused by the wind.

Meh, bring up a pontoon or boat sometime and a collection of chironomids in May/June and we'll get you into some real trout, maybe even a trifecta ('bow, tiger, brown combo) in one lake!

Ok….
I fully support your opinion.
I’m fishing a terrible spot.
No one should fly fish down here.
Edmonton flyfishin is definitely better by far……….
Pontoon probably is the way to go for up there. It’s never become a thing for me.
I gave my float tube away.

? Never said the south is no good. In fact, have had great outings on the Bow River and Oldman River but nowadays the long drive and my wobbly wading legs make it much easier to fish the local lakes/pot holes from my canoe!

I sure hear you. Between the wobbly legs and some foot issues wading is a sketchy prospect for me. But I don't mind the driving at all.
