Process for head submission if you want to keep the rack
Shot a whitetail in a cwd zone , but I want to keep the rack ... maybe a 150” deer . I guess a euro mount can’t be done . But maybe cut the skull cap off ? What’s the process ?

If you call a taxidermist I believe there’s a way to get this done.

100% can do a euro mount. I submitted the brain stem and lymph nodes. Got a negative result. My taxi just cut the brain stem out with a long knife and cut the lymph nodes out

You can do a shoulder mount as well. Your taxidermist will know what to do.

I did my own 4 years ago. I was instructed to cut a part out of the throat. I received the test results so it must have been acceptable.

Lots of videos online, look up “CWD sampling” it’s not too bad and you don’t have to cut the skull plate to get the right parts.

really easy to find the lymph nodes and brain stem, as mentioned lots of great videos out there showing how to do it. imo everyone should be doing it this way, especially those complaining about wait times. Sending in the samples rather than the entire head saves them time having to dig around for it themselves.

do they need both the brain stem and the lymph nodes? or do they need either one?

they want both. If I remember correctly, if the brain stem tests positive it tells them that the deer has had CWD for awhile already. If the brain stem tests negative but the lymph nodes test positive then the deer likely was infected with CWD more recently.

I do euro mounts as a side gig and have had to do several skulls from cwd zones. The easiest way to do it is to take off the bottom jaw, leaving as much throat as possible attached (this will have lymph nodes). Include the last vertebrae (so they get a bit of the spinal cord) and then dig in as far as you can in the brain to get the brain stem.
It might seem daunting, but it’s really quite simple.
Doesn’t affect the finished euro mount at all.

I’m definitely needing to brush up how to do this. Finally pulled a draw for an antlered mule deer and the zones have moved considerably west from years past.
Please post any highly recommended YouTube videos here.

it is pretty easy when you get in there. I did a mule deer buck last year.
keep your samples in separate zip locks

You can make the cut so the bottom of the eyesockets and the bones at the nose remain intact and submit the remaining part of the lower skull.
You will have what is left for a euro.
Or you can remove the lymph nodes and submit them and keep the skull intact for a full skull mount.

Update from last November …. Got the results back in March and was positive for cwd . Still have the rack in the backyard, but how I did it was I took the glands and the brainstem out and sent it in .
