Good Question I would have to ask how many people ate a deer with CWD but didn't know it long before CWD was so widely know as it is today with testing etc.

Shot my MD buck Nov 6; submitted in the head Nov 7, and just got the email saying Negative. WMU 160.

Super excited that it’s negative!

I'm not overly worried about it, however the testing here in Montana is free and I would prefer not to be patient 0 and have a disease like that named after me....

Shot my muley in 304 on Oct 26, submitted samples on Oct 28, got my result (negative) back Nov 4.

Buddy submitted his deer same zone on Nov 9, got his result (negative) back on Nov 22.

Personally I wait for the results.

It's a calculated risk I suppose.
Like knowing a certain number of people will die by vehicle collision each day yet still putting yourself and loved ones in the truck and driving to your hunting spot.
Hundreds if not thousands of deer that with CWD have been safely eaten but we all know people that have been killed on the hiway.

Anybody on the fence about this issue just watch the documentary on youtube about the human version of CWD within the cannibalistic tribes of new guinea. There is a reason some folks in the UK cannot donate blood.

**** is scary to see. There is so much most people do not know! dont risk it. Incubation period for one lady was 30+ years from new guinea.

I've done quite a bit of reading on CWD as well and It's scary sh!t. I have knowingly ate untested animals from infected zone and probably ate some yrs ago not knowing anything about CWD. If this prion does jump to humans we're screwed anyway. I am waiting on results for 2 md bucks but haven't decided if I will be tossing meat or not if it comes back positive. To me it's kinda like trying to avoid cancer, if you're going to get it you're going to get it. Plus CWD is not the only scary killer out there, there's many other little things that if they ever jump and survive into humans or into our feed supply we're all screwed.

It took roughly 10 years of lab testing on macaw monkeys before cwd jumped the species gap. Itll be a sad day when the first positive shows up in someone's cow.

New results from a long-term exposure trial now support the belief that the lethal prion disease is highly unlikely to spread to cattle.

In this 10-year trial, researchers from the University of Wyoming’s Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory (WSVL), the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) collaborated to expose groups of cattle to high levels of CWD prions. The researchers exposed cattle to CWD using two methods and in different locations in Colorado, Wyoming and at the USDA’s National Animal Disease Center in Ames, Iowa. One group of 12 calves received an initial oral dose of brain material from CWD-infected mule deer, with five un-inoculated cattle serving controls.

Two other groups of cattle spent 10 years housed in outdoor pens with CWD-infected mule deer or elk, with continuous exposure through feed, water and direct contact.

At the end of the trial, the researchers euthanized and examined all the surviving cattle. None of the cattle showed any sign of CWD or any neurological pathology during the trial period or at necropsy.

Somewhat positive news above. Disease is still largely unknown. Thus any critter I harvest still gets tested before it’s consumed by my family and friends.

Your right. Somewhat positive news. But it's still not a comfort knowing this deadly debilitating disease is roaming free throughout some areas when peoples livelihood depend on herd health and good habitat.

Deer heads submitted in the second half of the month always have longer wait times since that's the most fruitful time of the season. I submitted mine the Sunday after that and am also still waiting.

Young mule doe. With the high deer densities around here and west of the city it's pretty much game over.

Took my mule buck head in back around sept 20th, still no results. Guess I’m gonna have to dig into it. Was hoping to make some pepperoni with it soon.

Can anyone shed light on how it is determined to 'de-list' a CWD area?
For sure CWD can be controlled and reduced. I think new york state had CWD issues pre-2000's. And by 2005 it had been controlled and basically terminated as a large issue. Could or maybe has come back, not sure, but hunters will play the biggest role in terminating infected animals in CWD zones. Gotta keep hunting those zones to take out infected animals, as well as getting them tested to help trend the CWD numbers.

None the less, happy hunting!
