300 WSM Bullets

Any suggestions on a really slippery (high ballistic coeficient) bullet for reloading my 300 WSM in the 165 grain range? Also what powder load to make an accurate flying bullet?

May I ask what you're intending to hunt, and why 165 gr. bullets?

Nobody can accurately predict which bullet or powder will be accurate in your gun.Only testing loads in your gun will determine what your gun likes.
As far as bullet type goes,what is your use for the bullet?

Three bullets that you might try are:

168Gr Barnes TTSX
165Gr Nosler Accubond
168Gr Berger VLD

H 4350 and 165gr. Hornady Interbond's is my current loading
I also worked loads with IMR4350, and IMR4831, results were good, but H4350 was just a smidge better, and acheived similar results with 1 gr. less powder than IMR4350.

The usual caveats about rifles being distinctive as to their prefrences and accuracy potential apply as well.

I am using IMR 4350 (67 gr?) and Hornady interbond 165 gr. I hunt elk, sheep, this year moose (draw), and on occassion deer. This is not a bad load, it's just I am practicing some longer shots (350 +) and I know certain bullets and wieghts have exceptional ballistic coeficients which can help on the longer shots. If I remember correctly we chronographed this load around 3350 -3400 fps.

That sounds pretty fast, I'd think 3150-3200 would be the upper end.

Yup that's a tad quick for a 300WSM and a 165gr. bullet, I'd wager that load has you pretty much spot on 3100fps.

That's what I remember but at 47 what I remember isn't always right! I will check it out again in a week or so. Still wondering if anyone has a load and bullet that is accurate at longer distance?

3400 is book velocity for a 300 RUM and a 165 gr bullet.

That being said, I pushed some 168 gr A-max over the chrony at 3600 FPS out of my RUM. Mind you, there was almost 40 gr more powder involved

I've been using 180 grainers in my 300WSM.....Accubonds and CT Ballistic Silvertips...BC of 507(475 with the 165ers)..Me and my SS/A-Bolt loves em...course the whitetails, Black Bear and the Moose I've gotten will tell you something completely different!!...printed velocity is 3025 at the muzzle.....man, can't wait till I get me a chrony

LIVE AND LEARN!! I thought I would follow up on the 3400 fps for my 300wsm.
Here's the story.

Me and my buddy are fairly new to reloading and have been using a cheaper electronic scale. The other day I decided to check it out against the beam scale we have. 5 GRAINS DIFFERENT ON A 67 GRAIN LOAD!!. So what we thought were 67 gr loads were actually 72 gr. Actually had a problem with 2 243 rounds blowing the primers, couldn't figure out why. Obviously they were loaded way too hot as well. Just happy nobody got hurt.
I haven't re-chronied the 300 wsm yet but i am thinking the corrected load will be closer to what a few of you have indicated.

Right on the money with that thinking from my findings. I just finished working up my load with Hodgdon Hybrid 100V. I put every shot thru the chrono, and the results were:

65g - 3019
66g - 3095
67g - 3139
3137
3129
67.5g - 3195
3189
3192
68g - 3216
3222
3211
The most accurate load was 67.5g; both the 67g and the 67.5g loads were approx .75" groups with the 67.5 being a one hole group. The 68g load was tested a day later and seemed to open up a bit; both 3 shot groups ended up being right around 1". I'll post the actual target when I get a chance. Lovin' the new X-Bolt!!! Thanks to mtngoat for sharing his 100V load info with me. I never did reach the Point of diminishing returns with this load development, so I wouldn't be surprized if a load could be carefully pushed to the 3300 fps range using this powder. But I'll be staying put at 67.5g.

I'd take that load and expand it, and reduce it by 1/10th of a grain....just to check out if .7 is better than .5...or if .3 or ,4 is the "one hole" wonder...but that's just me.....any excuse to get back to the range!!
