Can you consistently watch your hits through the scope? Is it a heavy barrel?

I would have loved to try shooting them with the .257 wby mgn, but the deal fell through and I can't get to meet the fellow. I guess the 22 cal stuff will have to do.

A buddy of mine has had me looking for 257 wby mag ammo, and I was trying to get one, so I bought...not going to say how many boxes, but he has now backed out of his, I dont have 1, and there are LOTS of 257 here.

For plinking: Marlin 7000 HB + El cheapo Tasco. Accuracy exceeds my old 10/22. Great feel.

For small critters: .22 Hornet Ruger M77/22 heavy barrel + Weaver 2-10 x 38. Timney trigger. Eleven grains of powder per shot. I recommend this rifle.

For bigger varmints : .220 Swift Rem 700 VSSF + Leupold 6.5-20 x 56 Varmint Extreme. Big, expensive, long range coyote whacker.

I use a Burris 3-9X equipped C.I.L. 900 ( 54 Anschutz action) in .222 Remington for most of my coyote hunting (inside 250 yards), but for the long stuff have used everything from a 257Bob to a 300 mag.

Well this is a hard one boys. I guess my all time fav has to be my browning 22 hornet this little caliber has blown my mind in both the accuracy and terminal effects department. I have shot lots of beavers, coyotes and gophers with this gun it is topped with a 6-18 vx 2. My next favorite has to be my 243 model 7 predator hunter its topped with a 4-12 vx 1 I was shooting gophers with it out over 300 yards that got me thinking i should put a bigger scope on it then I had to remind myself it was my coyote gun. The last one is my rem 700 VS in 223 it is topped with a 6.5-20 vx3 long range. I must say I have never really fell in love with the 223 cartridge I find it doesnt put coyotes down as effectively as I think it should.

Default 20 EXTREME Long Range Varmint Wildcat

[IMG][/IMG]

My favorite gopher gun is a CZ 527 V with Kevlar Stock. I added a 24" PacNor Super Match Stainless barrel chambered on my wildcat 20 EXTREME. Topped with a Leupold VX3 6.5-20X40 LR the Varmint Hunter Reticule compensates a 3475fps Hornady V-Max to 500 yards when sighted 1" @ 100. This bullet travels the same trajectory as a 22-250 with a Remington factory 55 HP at that speed. I can push it to 3650fps with 20.4 grains RL 10X and run the same trajectory as the Fed 55 BTHP but why? It has more energy at 500 yards than the 22-250 with factory Hornady 40 V-Max ammo.

I can run the 32 grain bullets from 3650fps to 4125 fps with 20.6-22.6 grains of powder with many loads around 1/3MOA.

Over 500 gophers this spring.
