depending where you are fishing will depend on what you catch.
There are a few species that feed at night.

Nightdfeeders: walleye, sauger, lingcod, goldeye, mooneye and brown trout on moonlit nights, sturgeon, some bottomfeeders(sucker type)

September is the best month, time of day depends on species, or I guess a better description would be depends on the food. I find trout at a local pressured lake bit best during the day when it's windy, I'm guessing the wind stir's things up, when the wind quits in the evening, pretty much without fail the lake shuts down. Pike I always found the best during the day as well, and walleye when the sun goes down.
