Default Stingers?

Why do people use stringers even if it's not aloud, please tell me why.

I use them with a jig when fishing burbot. Just hook one of the trebles into the bait and most times it is the stinger that hooks up. Same with Spray Lakes through the ice. Your lost fish count will go down if you add a stinger to your jig. Again the stinger seems to be the hook that grabs em.

I always use a small #8 with a very short leader. but make sure you go with a quality hook.
