Default Fly Tying Vise

Was just wondering if anyone out there uses a Griffin Montana Mongoose fly vise and if so how do you like it. Or if not what vises would you guys/gals recommend?

I had one and sold it as the rotatary function was always coming lose and creating wiggle when tying, finally bothered me enough to sell it. Got a Renzetti and am quite pleased.

For a smaller more portable device, I have a Renzetti that I really like. The vice on my permanent fly-tying desk is a Nor-Vise, which I love.

I know two gentlemen who have moved from Griffen to Renzetti Their reason were the features of the Renzetti.

I use a Renzetti, but have been looking at the Petijean that Cabala's sells.

Maybe one day...but $750 is a lot for a Petijean fly vise.

P.S. Petijean makes some really cool accessories.

One day a "Law" vice will be at my hands.
But my skill level does not warrant such a high end vice ...yet.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, I have never tied a fly but it is something I really wanna get into as I am tired of buying them and it also looks like alot of fun. I have set aside about $200 for a vice as rather than buying cheaper vice and upgrading later I would rather just buy a good vice off the hop and hopefully keep it for the foreseable future. Those Renzettis look pretty good and the price seems pretty good too. Will definatly do some more research into them, thanks again.

That's a heck of a good start.
Check out the "from the vice" thread on here to see some of the AO talent.
Also....you-tube is a big help (check, Davie McPhail)

Good luck....it's an awesome hobby

I have a Montana Mongoose and really like it. I haven't had any problems with the rotary function, I believe they have upgraded the adjustment knobs on the more recent models.

I also use a Peak most of the time. I really enjoy using it. No complaints from me.

I upgraded to a Mongoose, have used it for a couple of years and like it. Haven't had any issues with it so far tying everything from big old ugly pike flies to smaller dries.

I use a Peak rotary vise as well. You can get one on at the fishin hole at their August sale and spend what you saved on more tools and materials.

Renzetti for my last 2000 flies or so. no plans to ever upgrade from there, nothing to complain about at all. size 20 dries -> size 2 3xl streamer hooks so far. always an easy tool to use

I have a Renzetti Traveler for my home use, I really like them. Keep threatening to try out an Apex anvil. Not sure why, just thought it'd make a nice vice to take along in the travel kit. I have a Thompson in there and a Renzetti Apprentise now, so, I don't really need it. Just like the look of it, and the way it felt.

nor-vise.. youtube it. it takes a few flies to learn to spin the vice and not your hands.

Well thanks for all the input everyone but in the end I decided to go with Renzetti Traveler. I headed down to Calgary on a little shopping spree on Friday and got myself a vice, some tools and a few materials. Tied my first fly last night and think it turned out pretty good for a first one I think. Put it side by side with one I bought and asked the wife which she thought was store bought and she said mine so that's something lol.
