Default Green Bin -Disposing of bones and after butchering

I just went on line for the city of Edmonton area on the green bins we get at home .
It says its for food scrapes ,bones, yard clipping even small wooden handles etc .
So after reading this, it sounds like we can fill it with all the bones of a moose and the meat scrapes after butchering . Not sure about the hide yet as I normally leave that in the bush . Anyone know the answer to that ? Has any one here been placing those bones in the green bin yet .

Just do it. Who's gonna check? They are not loaded by hand.

In Calgary I've been putting them in the green bin for a long time, just have to chop it up so it fits better. Never had any problems.

One of the few uses for this bin.

In the Green bin?
Sounds like dog hater talk to me.

The bones go to the dogs!
That is in the deal Humans made with Dogs at the beginning of Time.

It is really easy to find people to take the bones, especially in the city.
Let's not always take the easiest way to complete the hunt.

go to the Crowsnest Pass
The lazy hunters just throw the remains in the ditch by most roads
I would be o.k. if they at least took the remains off the road by a 100 yards
This just gives the anti hunters one more reason to ban hunting

Give the big bones to dogs, for the ribs and spine go deep into the bush on public and leave it, NOT in the ditch!

As I'm way south from you, someone closer will take it.
Thanks for the offer.

When I have excess bones, I simply ask a few neighbors that have dogs if they want the bones, and for them to pass the word. All the bones will be gone is very short order.

Bones are CRAZY $ now. More expensive than chicken or pork Meat.
To buy the equivalent of a moose skeleton would be Hundreds of dollars.
People are thrilled to have them gifted for their dogs, and it gives them a good reason to appreciate a hunter.

Depends on the dog. Mine will eat them. The whole thing. She just breaks them up in smaller razor sharp pieces and plays a little Russian Roulette with her digestive system.
She's afraid of everything, but food. Rez dog genetics....

Some locals don't put forth much effort in life, so not surprising.

I know that the City of Calgary does blue bin inspections in districts where people are putting the wrong type of stuff in the bin. We actually got a gold star on our bin.

Not sure if they do the same with green bins.

Anyway, here's a link to the City of Calgary website with the green bin regulations concerning dead animals.

All sorts of organic materials fit in a green bin . Some really heavy things fit in there too.

The green bin police can check my bin all they want. The bin is for food waste and food scraps which includes bones and meat trimmings- so I expect zero issues for those who put their bones in there.

Using compostable food waste bags I just bag the really small meat pieces as that could be pretty rancid if a few pieces cling on to the side of the bin and stay with you for a couple more weeks getting more and more ripe ....lol

That way you are totally following the green bin police rules.

Default Rib bones preferred

Ever see a wolf or coyote with tarter.
Rib bones with small amount of meat are great. Connecting tissue attached is like dental floss for dogs. Raw only so dont splinter.
I seldom feed leg bones as a few dogs have chipped teeth in their gusto.
Once is not enough i give them one each weekly

My dog at the farm would do all the meat removal of the scraps lleft on the bones
Border Collie

From there i have people that will take the bones for their dog. They are big dogs and crush them up.

A bone the size of a pop bottle is 10$, as mentioned above a few hundred dollars if buying retail bones for dogs. They are actually quite appreciated when you know a dog owner in one year may pay more for a few bones at the store than the game license was paid for.

This year i saw 9 deer carcasses disappear in short order.

City of Calgary does allow disposal of animal/game bones. BUT!! They do not allow skulls, hide or spinal columns. This is due to BSE/CWD risks that can potentially end up in the compost dirt that they make.

As far as “green bin inspections” they do not do inspections that I have ever seen, (and I’ve dumped A LOT of game bones during hunting season). They will leave a tag on your bin after a weekly pickup IF the driver sees something end up in his truck that does not belong but other than that I don’t think they actively inspect bin contents.

As a note, the dump (in Calgary) will also take bones and carcasses. You just need to tell the scale house what you have and they’ll send you to the right spot. I have delivered many a load of bones and suck to the main dump without any concern. (The looks from the other dump-patrons is always entertaining.)

Buy a fake skull and put it in the bin as well.
