Default BC salmon fishing

So I haven't fished in years let alone salmon fished, but I would like to go on a salmon fishing trip. But I don't know if I should go on a charter boat or fish in a river. I'm leaning toward river fishing by hiring an outfitter and learning from there with the intent of going on my own after I figure out what I'm doing. Just looking for input on what would be better for a beginner, a charter or an outfitter on a river. Thoughts please?

Where in BC do you want to go? Up north has lots of river closures.
