Default Need some ice fishing advice

Me and my buddy's are looking to go ice fishing in December to celebrate being done with this semester and just really want to catch some fish. Some of us have gone ice fishing before but not all and we are looking to bring a fish or two home, any kind would do. I've been looking around for a lake within 3 hours or so from Edmonton and can't really decide where to go. I've had some really crappy luck the past few years and just don't want to get skunked again.
Any tips on what lakes are any good or where to direct my research would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

If you want fish to bring home in Alberta your best bet is shop the seafood department at the grocery store....

What kind of fish are you hoping to target?

Honestly anything. Whatever gives us the best chance of catching something edible. If it doesn't taste like mud then that would be great.

I would be going to a walleye/pike/perch lake if you didnt want mud.

Calling lake
lesser slave lake
lac la biche
south buck lake
sylvan lake
gull lake

just be simple and basic. Just a jig head and a minnow

Default Ice fishing in December

I'd second Huy's recommendations and add to check ice conditions for the lake you decide on. December ice can be iffy. Good luck!

I doubt anything will be driveable in Dec as it has been quite warm. Walk-on by mid-Dec should be good on most lakes noted. Quadable likely by end of Dec unless weather forecast changes significantly.

Don’t be afraid to target burbot in some of those lakes as well. Definitely a good fish to catch and eat on the winter! I heard buffalo had 6+ Inch’s of ice already, sylvan and gull might be close behind, cold weather coming!”

Never caught a burbot so that would really awesome if we could manage to do that. Is it much different than targeting other fish like walleye and such?

Bounce a glow white jig head with a minnow off the ground u have a slight chance at a good multispecies day. Burbots I find love the white glow jig head.

If you don’t catch anything don’t blame me

Only problem there is they can't keep pike or walleye.

There may still be some undersubscribed tags available though

lol thanks for all the help! This matches to what I've see online so I'm hopeful it'll work out.
