Default Tax Time again

It's once again that most hated time of the year Something new has appeared on my radar this year. My dear wife got a letter from CRA telling her that if she had no income last year, she doesn't need to file a return but can just call in to CRA with that information and all will be taken care of.

Is this a new thing? What are your thoughts? My accountant is recommending we still file her return through him but I'm wondering if he is just trying to make a couple of bucks from us.

I'm no expert but would the accountant need to file my wife's return in order to file mine as well? Sounds fishy to me

Once again my wife has nothing to claim as she didn't have a cent of personal income in 2017. We're also not eligible to income split or anything like that.

Thoughts?

The program was announced.

Your accountant shouldn't charge much for that one, if any, as it should take less than 10 minutes.

Doing this for a living, I can't think of a reason for why your wife shouldn't take advantage of 'File My Return'. If your accountant knows your wife's income is nil, then it's pretty easy to make sure your return reflects that with the additional tax credit you can claim.

And CRA assesses any potential benefits or credits based on household income, so as long as your wife files a return, whether through 'File my return' or your accountant, CRA can assess whether or not you two quality for those benefits/credits.

Default Accountant didn't like this

So my wife did phone in her details (or lack thereof) to the CRA, and I dropped off my taxes only at the accountants office. Four phone calls later, he finally gave in after my wife said to him over and over that she had no income or deductions whatsoever for the fourth year in a row. How much do you care to bet that my bill for the one return will be the same as last years two returns? Or maybe even more because he will have to charge for the four phone calls.

Now that income splitting is no longer available both of your returns should be pretty easy. I don’t have the deductions that other people have so I just use one of the free government approved computer programs on their site. GenTax I think it is.

Has the accountant given a reason for not wanting your wife to go through 'File my return'?

Talking New Tax Process

Apparently there is also a new 4 point process from the CRA:

1. how much did you make ?

2. how much did you spend ?

3. how much is left ?

4. send it in !!

Default Feeling ripped off and violated

So as I suspected the bill for the one return was exactly the same price as last years two returns. Apparently I had to pay for the 4 phone call consultations which were us arguing with the accountant about not filing my wife's return through him this year, repeating information that we had already filled out on the form he sent us prior to filing, and asking when they figured the return would be ready for review.

To top it off they told us the cheque would be mailed out but the letter states that they have requested automatic deposit. Into what account? They don't have that information an niether does CRA.

And to get me even more ticked off, we told them they could NOT share any of my information with Elections Canada and apparently they did.

Am i being over reactive about this? Is there a governing agency that watches stuf like this? This is a big company. Worth scrapping with them?

My shadow will never darken that door again.
