Default Loaded Handgun/Mag storage Question

Hi All,
I don't want to get into the whole legal rules issue here but am more interested in clarifying a difference of opinions.

I know several law enforcement members who store their issue firearms loaded. Many finish their shift and just lock the pistol in their locker loaded. Some remove the mag and others leave one in the action and a loaded mag of 15 in the pistol.

For years there have been differing opinions on this causing damage to the firearm. The main argument against the loaded mag is that this may eventually cause the spring inside to weaken from always being compressed. Does anyone have any knowledge on this.

Thanks for you input.

I think it's safe to say that storing the magazines loaded will eventually lessen the life of the spring, but I doubt anyone would notice unless it was over a number of years.

These guys you know actually store their service pistols loaded? That's seems like a really bad idea to me.

Springs wear out from cyclic loading, not from being left compressed. Unless we are talking hundreds of years.

This. Think of the spring's in your car. Obviously heavier but they don't wear out from the weight of the car. I would think you wouldn't want to leave one in the chamber for extended time due to possibility of corrosion.

When I had my atc I was told to carry one in the pipe but when I took that one out to put it in the range bag. It had something to do with chambering the same round over and over again. I couldn't say what the exact reason was because I have forgotten it.

I’d say 99% of the time I leave my carry gun loaded and unless I’m cleaning or shooting my AR mags are always left loaded with 20 or 28 rounds depending if it’s my 556 or 762. When I was in the Army our mags were left loaded from the time we got in country to the time we got into a firefight or went home. I don’t buy into the theory of leaving a mag loaded weakens the spring.

Agreed, springs are only weakend by motion, just as taking a piece of wire and repeatedly bending it at the same spot. Being left under compression will not hurt a spring in your lifetime.
