Default Bad Referee

Got to witness 1 of the worst refereed games in the historyof minor hockey.
The boys were in aAtom toury. in Olds on the wkend.Playing the host team
sunday morning ,witnessed something I will never see again or want to see.
This guy handed out 78 pims for the 2 teams (64 visitors-14 home)an
2 gross misconducts to the vis. coach.
We probably deserved some( 20 mins)maybe, but this clown took it 2
another level. The coach could not even get him to explain some of the calls.
When he did come over he gave the coach 2 gross misconducts and had the
nerve to tell him he was a disrespect to the hockey parent. No this guy was a
disrepect to the hockey world, god forbid if I ever have to witness something
like that again. At least the home side coaches apologized to our coaches.
They could not believe it them selvs, truly gut wrenching.
Thanks ref you missed what probably would have been a good game?

Thats too bad, i hate seeing games influenced like that. But as a high school basketball ref i can tell you its not nearly as easy at it looks. Bad calls are made but you dont get paid near enough to go through all the headache of reffing without doing your best job possible.

Atoms? What, these kids are like 6 years old aren`t they?
Sounds like you guys need a new ref. That`s a lot of penalties for a bunch of little kids.

I got to ask, what did the visiting coach do to deserve 2 Gross misconducts?

What level of Atom is this? And why did you think your team deserved 20 minutes in penalties?

Thanks
Jamie

The kids are Atom tier 2 ,and all the coach wanted was an explanation to
what the penalty call was.He would not give it to him,so the coach
got a little upset .They got into a arguement the ref threw him out
once they keep arguing gave him a gross, kept arguing gave him another.
Things got a little heated but not to the extent of what happened.
This ref was a joke?

So the coach couldn't control himself in the face of some questionable calls. It's likely his team couldn't either. I suspect a lot of those 64 minutes came AFTER the coach was ejected. Certainly you run into some bad refereeing in the course of a season, or in the course of one's life. It's understandable to get upset. he was probably justified. But you shake your head and then go on as you should. I would expect the the coach to lead the kids by example, and maybe he did.... a bad example perhaps.

Character is revealed when things don't go your way. What did he reveal to the kids?

Being a referee is no where near as easy as it looks. I have been on both sides the coach and the referee the first thing both sides have to realize is the game is for the kids not the ref or the coach...
A ref can have a bad game just as a player can, however they are human too, not an excuse just a fact.
The last thing you want to have happen as a ref is to lose control of the game, sounds like that is what happened here. Too bad for both teams, its the kids that suffer.

I am not sure how the Ref felt that night but I would almost guarantee that the coach felt extremely embarrassed.

Tough time for all involved.

G-dammit Oko, I hate having to agree with you. But that is exactly what I was thinking. Being a ref is a thankless job. Refs have been beaten, spit on, and generally abused by parents and coaches for long enough. I used to coach little league baseball as well as soccer, and could not believe the things people would say to the ump/ref. Disgusting (and a lot of it criminal under the law).

Badboy, you should be telling your kids (I am assuming your kid(s) were in the game) that good sportsmanship is what is most important - not winning. Sounds like the Coach got turfed for beaking off and setting a bad example for the kids and a precedent for the parents present. In my opinion, anyone (adult) who gets 2 gross misconducts back-to-back should maybe have to take the rest of the season off to think about what they did.

Bad calls happen, and no, they are usually not malicious. IT IS A GAME. Keep that in mind.

Yup...gotta agree. How old was the ref? How old was the coach? Something to think about there.

I've coached for the last 15 years from the ages of 5 to 20...at some of the higher levels, you could classify it as a 'profession'. I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a ref make a fool out of themselves, but there's not enough fingers and toes on my teams to count the times I've seen other coaches make a fool of themselves.

And I was that coach 2x..never again.

Hold on for a minute, just exactly how much does the outcome of the "game" affect the players/coaches pay cheque? Nothing probably! So let it slide and file a formal complaint with the league powers. I'd only lose it if there was intent to hurt opponents. Show the kids how to take the "high road".

I agree with Oko again!!

Every time I go to a kids hockey game and some schlubb is yelling at the ref, I think to myself, why do these kids even bother reffing. Talk about a thankless job.

Like I said in the begining all the coach wanted was an explanation on the call
the ref would not give it to him,so to me he made a mistake on the call and
could not think of a reason. Our coach in his mid 30s is so mild manner that
to see him like that caught me off guard, the ref in his mid 50s had no control
on his game. When the coach went to file a complaint to the head of
officiating guess who is the head official is ,yup the ref doing the game.
When the other teams coaches are apoligizing for his pathetic game they
have probably seen this show before. It was brutel plain and simple.

As I read through these posts laughing to myself..... guessing who this ref. might be....... I nailed it on the head. He has caused countless problems with my kids teams. Numerous times police end up being involved people are so upset. YET it is never his fault. Probably not right to name him here . I do know the name.

Referee's have a terrible, thankless job. That I fully agree. You have to wonder why some people do it. But this is a prime example of a fella that shouldn't be doing it.

the definition of a gross misconduct is making a travisty of the game. when a ref screws up that bad it really makes you wonder who should be getting the gross?
