Exclamation "Silver Labs"

I just received this note from the Canadian Kennel club on the topic of registering a Labrador Retriever as Silver in colour. The American kennel club will not register a Lab as silver, they maintain that it is a variant of the chocholate lab.

The owner of Razorlabs in Manitoba who is advertizing on this site suggests that the odd coloured dog is not a pure bred at all.

"Thank you for contacting the Canadian Kennel Club.

Per the breed standards, the colours for the Labrador Retrievers are Chocolate, Yellow and black. If for some reason or another that the dog is silver and purebred, the registration department will try to accommodate the color but this would be a disqualification for show purposes."

Well stay tuned I'm sure we will be seeing more "improvements" on the dog that is the cornerstone of hunting dogs in North America!

I sure hope not but it wouldn't be the first time a hunting breed has been ruined by breeding for a recessive characteristic.

I agree, already it seems to me that many Labs belonging to the various color variations come from a gene pool more concerned about color than any other desirable traits one might want in a lab.

Per the breed standards, the colours for the Labrador Retrievers are Chocolate, Yellow and black.

I guess that is the bottom line.

If you want to invent another colour like silver or fox red or blonde bomshell
go for it. It will just not stick to the papers.

James Lamb Free who wrote the "bible" on retriever training, and who had some strong opinions on breeding labs for color, is probably rolling over in his grave at the thought of a SILVER lab.
