Default If you could draw a moose..

If you could draw a moose tag anywhere in Alberta where would you choose? I have alot of priority banked up for bull moose that I plan to try and cash in within the next two years so just throwing around ideas. We have lots of moose around us but nothing too big.

Default moose

Lots of large bull moose areas still exist. I have Alberta map with B & C moose marked and about 10 top trophy moose areas. If you have some areas you are interested in hunting I will confirm if you will have good probability to connect with some antlers.

Farm land Wmu's holds some big boys these days. No clue as to where as I do crown land but if I had to burn points looking for a brute, the farm country is where I would go. Someone will chime in with some Wmu's to check out.

Wmu 999 isn’t bad.

Seriously though. Getting your scouting figured out before hand is great. Lots of guys say “ I drew this area, where do I go”

What I think you should do is carry it one more year and take a week during the rut to seriously scout the area your thinking and test the waters for land owners in that area. If you scout hard next season and are still having issues finding any, shoot me a PM and I’ll send you what I found and where. Then you can decide if you want to apply there. Deal?

How many points do you have?
With 12+ i would suggest 160, 158 or 208.
A 50”+ Bull isn’t too hard to find in that area. As long as you’re willing to put in the time to find it.

Out of Province, actually out of Country but since we are talking moose.... watched this guy for over 30 min and he could have cared less. Good thing there’s only 1 tag in this district t and it as already filled! Maybe I’ll put in there next year...

“A lot of priority” so is that 5 or 25?

There are some absolute giants that require horses and p15 or higher. There are some giants that require permission (that you’d better have ahead of the draw) and p6-7.

Depends how far you want to go, how long you have to do it, what kind of weather you are willing to camp and hunt in, archery or rifle, reliable team of partners or solo, if you want to knock on doors or not.

Be aware that truly giant bulls know where they are safe and only get rut-stupid for a pretty short window. I’d have 3 good bulls scouted. So if your target bull spends that window somewhere you can’t get to, gets blown out by wolves or “them” etc you can go to the next one.

If you want to hunt the rut that leaves out a good portion of the farm land moose as most of those zones have only a November season, after the rut the old bulls are tired and don't move a lot unless pushed, 402 holds some large moose have seen them personally but I believe its about a 16 or higher priority, most zones in the north are at least 5 or 6 unless you go way north into the country north of manning, do your homework and get survey numbers.

I alway apply in the northern zones because I like it up there and I like to hunt the rut, and I don't need permission on crown land, but if I was really just after a big guy I know there are a few really nice bulls out on private farm lands and 1 for sure that will break the 60" mark easy, have seen them a few times but that's another story. I've been hunting moose for 45 years in Alberta and have only taken 3 in the 54 - 60" category they are tough to come by even in the rut.

Good luck with your search

He's not a troll, he's an instigator.

Just what type of bull you looking for? Zones like 214/314 have tons of moose but anything over 50” is rare and it’s mostly private land.

I saw a bull this fall in farm land within an hour of Edmonton that would have been a good 55” bull. I haven’t saw a bull like that in many years. As much as I like hunting NW of Manning, the numbers just aren’t there anymore.
