Default Pembina Info/Help

I've been searching the forums and looks like Pembina River is a nice place to check out. I'm not a fly fisherman.

Can you still catch fish in the Pembina if your not fly fishing? What should i use as a set up? What type of fish am i going to catch in there?

I'm new to fishin in alberta. I was thinking about heading out this summer a few times with the girlfriend. It's not a far drive at all.

Thanks for the help.

Depends what area of it your fishing in. Upper has trout/grayling and lower has pike/walleye, etc.

Any spinners, spoons or rubber jigs will do. There's a bait ban and the same for other streams around there. Also your hooks barbs need to be pinched off for fishing in Alberta waters just in case if you didn't know already.

Good luck

Thanks for the info. What defines upper and what defines lower?

Anyone actualy caught a trout out of that river? I thought it was just me and my bad luck to never get one but in Barry Mitchells book "Fishing the Trout Highway" he noted that he had not ever seen anyone catch a trout from the pembina. On another note if there is a bait ban a good technique is to use your favorite bait rig and just substitute a fly. Fishing nymphs on kind of a pickerel rig seems to catch whitefish better for me than actualy fly fishing them.

Yes, I've caught brookies out of there.

It's a hard fished stream and reaches tend to get fished out. Need to walk far out to find them.

Might want to read it again, think he was talking about rainbows.

Marginal fishery upstream of forestry trunk in my opinion. Some of the little tribs are okay but still, nothing incredible. I prefer to go spend time on the McLeod, Embarrass, or Erith. I have not spent any time further downstream on the Pembina though, maybe some better water to be found.

In my experience the pembina is a much better warm water fishery downstream of drayton than it is a cold water fishery upstream. But there are fair numbers of white fish in there.
