Default Alberta government experiments with 5-year Pembina fishing ban

The Alberta government is targetting the Pembina river for a new project to restore wildlife to the area.

It starts with a five year fishing ban.

Speaking on the Alberta Morning News, the Alberta Wilderness Association’s Carolyn Campbell says the Pembina area is vital to Alberta.

“There’s some forestry industry, there’s oil and gas industry, there’s roads, there’s some recreation, so I think it remains to be seen exactly how the government and regulators will work with industrial users, but we understand that there are restoration plans,” says Campbell.

She explains how it works.

“It’s a combination where for five years they’re going to try out no fishing, but also habitat restoration actions.”

Campbell says there’s been some conservation work in the past, but this new project will accomplish much more. She also believes it’s a new opportunity to learn.

More information can be found at the Alberta Fish and Wildlife website. (djs)

I believe the ban is in place for a certain section of the Pembina. Have to double check, but I think the ban only goes from highway 40 up to highway 753. Somewhere around drayton valley I think. Would have make sure of the exact boundaries, but it's that general are. https://albertawilderness.ca/wordpre...restperiod.gif

I would be curious to hear more about the habitat restoration plan. That part, at least, sounds promising. Something hopefully worth volunteering for. Thanks for the post on this.
