Default lynx or bobcat?

I was out doin a little bushwackin yesterday around fort mcmurray and I came across a fresh rabbit kill. There were cat tracks all around it in the fresh snow. I'm wondering if anyone could tell me how to differentiate between lynx or bobcat. I'm guessing it was bobcat but i've been wrong before.

bobs have the track the size of a house cat, lynx has a track the size of a young cougar

The bobcat _might come as far south as Red Deer, I guessing. But I would put money on what you saw was not a bobcat. If you saw the stomache as having been left and not eaten, it was for sure a lynx. They are real fussy what they eat..lol

Probably a lynx in that region. Not to say they are not around, but I have never seen or heard of a bobcat north of Edmonton. I have only ever seen them in the coulees and valleys south of Calgary.

Anyone out there ever see, trap or hunt a bobcat any further north than Red Deer?

Default Bobcat Picture

My uncle sent me this picture of a bobcat in front of his house in Calgary. I believe they are smaller than a lynx and have more defined spots.

in a 'animals of alberta' book by John acorn he suggests that bobcat can be equal to or larger than the lynx. Both in mass and height.
I have a full mount lynx, they are a funny looking gangly animal when posed improperly.
nice bobcat photo...i would love to see one

maybe i should have started my own post but a friend of mine swears he seen a lynx at his irrigation canal merely 200 yards behind his house. However here is the catch he lives merely 5 kilometers out of Medicine Hat, Medicine Hat!!!

If there are lynx and such here im happy but I think he may be mistaking it for one of them there world class house cats.

Are there lynx or bob cats rounds these parts

You will see lynx, cougar, blackbear, moose, wolves etc follow the rivers downstream. There have been all the animals i just mentioned spotted in recent years down in the south country. Its not real common, but it does happen. No doubt afew bobcat have strayed from what would be called their traditional habitat as well. But ya, i agree, bobcat are primarily southern. Lynx obviously with their huge paws are northern and built for staying on top of snow.
