Default Closeing a thread

When there is a thread of interest to many, why does it get shut down by
a few, why not shut down the offenders and let the rest contribute more
information.

The mods have enough to do without editing mass amounts of post just to keep a sideways thread going.

Wouldn't it be less work for them to get rid of the offenders vs shutting down multiple threads though?

And most things run it's course before another wanker spews off so they shut it down to prevent any further issues.

I'm not sure if it would be less work but the idea sounds good..

It's a no win situation. Ban the azzhats and you are ruining the forum from its glory days. Delete and/or edit posts and they cry censorship. Yawn.

If you only knew of the ‘barbell’ thread. That was the most epecist late night thread of epic proportions. Current mods wouldn’t even know about it due to a rare permanent deletion.

I was a mod here
No one but a mod has ANY IDEA what goes on behind the scenes that requires a mods attention

Editing a thread to keep it going? No chance. Nuke it and move on.

I could just imagine... I been in the penalty box before for stating the obvious and trying not to cross the line. The political thing gets pretty hot pretty fast as does the b.c alberta thing. Hats off to the moderators. I probably deserved it but it is the alberta outdoorsmen and as a proud albertan beaten to a pulp we get a bit defensive and rightly so. Be careful what you defend or support out west guys. Just my humble opinion.

I always wonder if it’s the same people that do the majority of the complaining to the mods.

You have to remember, the moderators are Albertans as well.
This forum has lots of rules, but the best one and one of the most heavily moderated site I have seen was Shortmags.org.
Some of us were there.
Nothing but good info pertaining to basically shortmags and their variants.
There were a few sub forums, but everything stayed on track and out of the military, political or otherwise confrontational threads and posts.

Some members report more than others , however just some members get reported more than others, if that makes sense.

In all honesty, no. In the time I was a mod, the people who reported posts did not do so constantly. Only thing they had in common is they were sick of watching grown men act like two year olds. There was one member who reported lots of stuff on the buy and sell (ads with no location or price), and that was appreciated.

I always have liked the way you roll

If you were at work and not able to respond to complaints, often a thread would take 30 minutes to read through, decipher who was being a tool, and then remove his posts, and responses who quoted the problem post. Oi vey.

I can only imagine how many hours it takes to delete spammers, move posts that are posted in the wrong forum, read complaints, look at the posts the people are complaining about, and then edit or delete posts as required. That would involve a lot of man hours, a considerable amount of time spent per mod, if they all spent equal time performing these tasks.

Default Closing a thread

Instead of closing the playground, never mind sending the bullies to see the principal, expel them for good. That may lessen the mods workload.

People complain when threads get closed, when people get banned or suspended
Or when topics are not allowed because everybody has a perfect solution but there is no perfect solution because everybody knows better!. Maybe closing this site would work but then people would complain about that as well!

Some people are happier complaining it seems. Why else do they do it so much?

It really isn't as easy as it sounds.

First, determining who started what can be a daunting task. Things carry over from one thread to another for one thing.

Second, everyone has a bad day now and again. Some good folks get banned because some troll got under their skin, That's sad.

Then there is time. And the moderators state of mind. When I was moderating, it was often after a long shift plowing snow or fixing guard rail.
I tried to be impartial but it's pretty hard when one is tired and hungry.

Better to just shut down the thread and keep a watch on the participants to see if one emerges as more interested in controversy then exchange.

Another thing, very few mods have any experience much less training in how to moderate.

For my part, the few threads I shut down, were shut down after consulting with the other mods, and with the hopes that participants would take the hint and not throw insults back and forth in some future thread.

It's easy to think the solution is easy, until one has the magic buttons in hand, then a whole host of unforeseen issues arise.

Not meaning to derail but is it possible for a banned person to get back on the forum? Im thinking that a person could come back by using another name or email address? Thanks
