Good thing it was a young juvenile as it says only 80lbs. If it would have been a full grown I don’t think the runner would still be here to tell his story.

Default Holy smokes

It’s great to hear that the guy is doing fine other than superficial wounds.. hopefully no infections will set in and he will heal up fine.

On a second note, I sure hope they give him the cat.. I would definitely want to be able to send to taxidermy or in the least save the pelt and skull etc claws as an actual trophy(I’m not a trophy hunter, I hunt for meat.. dental work on the head are just bonuses) but this is what I would consider a well earned trophy! And one heck of a story to tell.
Thank god buddy survived!
Well done!

I had difficulty hanging on to a 10 lb housecat, although I was trying to castrate him.

You probably missed the using a rubber boot part to secure the front end.

Lol, ever try bathing a 10lb cat that does not want to be bathed. It horrible.
They seem to turn into 40lbs of razors and knives.
Lucky man though.

Only 80lbs... pffft.

I hate to admit I had a hard time handling a 8lb farm cat that decided to attack my hand...

Lucky guy with one heck of a story.

Waiting for the "Chloroform on a rag for cougar defense" thread...

Anyone ever cornered a barn cat. Not fun! I'd say good on ya at an 80 pounder.

Default cougar

Cougar hunter in Bella Coola few years back was asked to deal with one that had come into town. He did not have his dogs with him and knelt down to check tracks. Cougar attacked him, he fought it off but was cut up quite a bit. Even a cougar expert can get attacked.

How many people can claim to have killed a big cat with their bare hands?

VERY COOL!

I would add that to my Resume

Hope he gets to keep the cat

Decades ago my grandfather killed some sort of wild cat (maybe a lynx or something similar) with a pitch fork. He was a big, strong man, served in World War I, and spent a lot of years working in coal mines and on farms.

Default hard to believe

I am not buying the story. That cat (most any cats) would shed you to bits trying to run away until you let it go. I doubt a guy would want to keep hanging onto it.

Yeh the trail runner made the whole thing up,,,

Truth is he got his face and body bitten and scratched by a 300 pound cougar he met drinking TOOO many Rainiers at Bubbhas Suds and Burger Saloon,,

His face looks like she gave him quite a lickin , she wanted more,, so did he

Edmonton journal reported that this was a baby lion, only 35-40lb. It was by himself, no mama around him. The autopsy showed that it was healthy but with a small amount of fat. It was hungry, so it was a predatory attack. The guy was lucky that big momma wasn’t around, otherwise he would be a dinner for a family.

Wow 80 pounds is considered a big cat? I always thought they'd weigh more... Especially adults...

Same here.
And I did use the rubber boot.
The cat hated me ever since.
I only tried to do him a favor. lol.

Chris Guomo on CNN last night featured the story at end of his news cast, sure making the rounds in the media.

From what I gathered from the interview, he wasn’t hanging onto the cat, the cat was hanging onto him.

And he killed it with his boot, not his hands.

The guy south of GP that killed the sow grizzly with a knife still holds the self defence title in my books.

I watched the interview the only mention of the weight of the mountain lion that attacked Travis Kauffman was by Travis himself who said the estimated weight was 50 lbs .

Farther along in the video a Colorado State Wildlife man said that some officers went to the area the same day ( or that night ) and retrieved the body of the cat which was partially consumed .

Glad that Travis Kauffman is going to be ok he is a well spoken fellow .

some younger mountain lions on this video from Vancouver Island https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp6vg4QcZOg

Yeah, that's journalism for ya. Try twice that size for a big lion.
