Default South Bend Fly Rod

I have my grandfathers South Bend Model 49 9' split bamboo fly rod, in the original cloth bag.

I have tried researching on-line for information on the rod, but cannot find any reference to this particular model. Lots of info out there on others.

Not looking to sell or value the rod, just looking for any information on it, like what year it was built (I guess 1949) and what it was rated for, trout, etc.

Anyone with vintage rod knowledge that can shed some light would be appreciated.

I flyfish with more modern rods and have considered using the old one just for sentimental value, but do not want to break it if that is unadvisable considering the age of the rod.

Thanks in advance for taking the time.

eBay is a good source for value.
And this web based forum if chock full of bamboo builder, users, collectors.

And the oldest rod I’ve worked on and cast was built about 1890.

Lots of rods built after the Second War are still used today.

Thanks very much Don. I will join that forum and continue the search. Don't care about value just trying to get an idea of when it was built. Lots of info about other South Bend rods but I only found 1 reference to the model 49 and that was an ad describing the rod.

One site even featured a South Bend catalogue listing model 47 and model 50, but nothing related to the 49.

I guess if your still using a 100+ year old rod, my grandpa is going fishing again this summer.

Thanks again for the response.

Minor Update

The rod is a #47 9'

The classic rod site was very helpful.

It would make a big water trout rod. The 9 footers aren't that popular as they are a heavy rod good for throwing big streamers or bass bugs. I have one that I use in the Okanagan to throw poppers for big bass. Would make a nice streamer or wet fly rod. Yep scoot over to teh classic forum for more info.
