Default Bear hides wanted

As the title says, I’m looking for a couple bear hides to train the dogs. If you have one sitting in a freezer from a meat bear you shot, or one you’re not going to mount I’ll take it off your hands.
I didn’t want to just shoot one this spring for the dogs to chew on

Thanks in advance

In BC it is. They are used as training aids for the dogs.

Ya, we outfit in BC for bears as well as cats. The bear hides are used for drags to train the dogs and keep them in shape.
No spring season for us this year at all due to the Covid provincial border closures in addition to the federal closure. So we like to run them a few times a week on drags. A bear hide will make about 3 good chunks big enough to use.

Not as good as the real thing but it will have to do for now.

In November we’ll start running lynx again which is way more fun for the dogs lol

Would it be legal to use Alberta harvested bear hides or would that be wasting of hide?

Trapper Mike, bear shot on private land in Alberta do not come with any requirement to retain the hide.

Likely a grey area up for interpretation.

You’re not supposed to skin a bear, take the meat and leave the hide there on the ground. But not everybody who kills a bear wants to keep having hides tanned or mounted.
I’m going to use the hide..... but I’m sure someone wouldn’t like it.

And the private land bears shot all over the province have no restrictions so no grey area there.

I’m willing to bet a few hundred bear hides a year are frozen until no longer useable then end up in a landfill.

Didn’t know about the private land issue, thanks for the information.

Know a beekeeper?
They kill a LOT of bears and aren’t allowed to do anything with them.
