new area help, WMU 353
Hey Hunters,
my son and I have decided to try a different WMU area for this fall, he has a Cow elk tag and I have a Cow moose tag.
We did a little drive thru from the forestry trunk road to Little Smoky looking for somewhere to start our hunt.
We are hoping for some advice on a good starting point where we could look to fill both sets of tags.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When I worked on seismic in that country in the 70s, there were so many moose, they were yarding up in the winter, we'd see 6 or 7 at a time. those days are done.

West of range 23 as the cow moose tag is only good for the western side of the zone. Elk seem to be a little more plentiful in the west side also but you will still have to find them.

I’ve put time in there and don’t see much for elk. Be prepared for the mud. It’s soft even for Alberta.

Two years ago We had a bull moose draw and saw plenty of cows in a few spots off the Tony Creek road.

As was stated, be aware that your cow moose tag is only good for the Western part of the zone. Refer to Page 31 of the 2020 Draw Booklet, most of the Tony Creek road mentioned is out of the allowed area I believe...
For cow elk I'd concentrate on getting away from the roads and hunting near the larger rivers.
As mentioned, make sure you have good vehicles/tires/trailers for the possible mud in September/October. It can be something else, especially on the side roads in that zone. Two trucks are always good in case you have any issues.
Good luck on your hunt!

You have a good chance to pick up antlerless moose, but as mentioned you must only hunt far west side of wmu. Antlerless elk another story, only about 30 elk shot each year and few hundred tags issued.
It was one of best moose zones but heavy hunting pressure over last 20 years as they issue most moose tags of any zone in province to try save the Little Smokey caribou.
