Default Rifle Scope Placement

My daughter bought a Savage Axis in 6.5 Creedmore this spring at Cabelas. Nice little rifle for her first. Cabelas mounted the scope and we set out over the summer working on her shooting. She was hitting well and shooting about 3 inch groups at 100 yds. She went hunting in the fall and actually shot her first deer with it although her shot placement was off quite a bit. After talking with her about it she explained what she was seeing for sight picture. It appears that the scope is a little too far forward for her to get full sight relief. I intend to help her and move it back a bit to get more visibility. Is there any specifics that I need to know for distance to her eye? Obviously don't want scope bite but just looking for a starting point or any advice you may have?
Thanks.
FG

all scopes will actually say the eye relief for them, you just need to look up your model.
get her to shoulder it at home, make sure she is holding it correctly, then measure away.

Adjust accordingly.

Hey Freeride, thanks for the info. I will get it set up after some research. Thanks.

I am note sure. It was a rifle scope package Cabelas was offering. I will have to check with her.

Quite often that's the weaver kaspa scope... if it is here is the chart from weaver, if it doesnt load right it's under the specs tab in the chart. Grab the model number off her scope and find the eye relief.
This is just a guideline though, make sure it works for her.

Move the scope back until she has a full sight picture when the rifle is shouldered.

I also check when prone and kneeling as personally I tend move slighly in and out. When all 3 are good, I adjust the crosshair level and tighten down.

Shot in the summer with light clothes on.
Then she shot it in the fall with more clothes on, therefore the scope seemed further away.

Exactly, don't worry about measurements.

Make sure you have your hunting jacket on when you set it up.

I have noticed that beginners and women especially often will hold their heads way back when shouldering a rifle (like they are scared of it). Check her cheek weld for correct positioning. Then adjust as required. Women tend to have longer necks than men (especially me) and can use a higher comb.

Put zoom on max as well before adjusting. Eye relief is usually a bit shorter at max zoom.

I am in Calgary. I have basic mounting stuff, the levels and torque wrench’s. I can get it a lot better for her than what you’ll get by the staff at the big box stores that just slap it on. There isn’t that much to mounting a scope but there’s a bit more to getting it mounted and set up properly to the shooter. By no means am I an expert but I will help you out if you would like.

Hey folks, thank you all for the input. It is excellent and I appreciate it. Will have her squared away and ready for next season in short order.
AO is always so awesome and helpful.
