Default AO long range rifle build!

Okay guys, this thread is a continuation of the original Mauser action thread that Obsessed1 donated.

This rifle is being put together for new and junior shooters to use at our range in Ft. McMurray where we have ranges out to 1,000 meters
Anybody who wishes to help out with other parts of the build or even powder and bullets , etc, just jump in !

1:The assembly labor is graciously being donated and performed by fps plus

2:The action is from a '98 Parker Hale Safari .

3:Barrel is a Benchmark 30" in 6mmBR donated by Rugerfan
I originally was going to doo it with a spare 308 barrel but Rugerfan wanted to help out with it as well and who can argue with a Benchmark barrel donation!

4: a 20 MOA rail will be donated by Dick284 and myself.

5: Stock to be determined, but I believe I have an extra

6: brass for the 6mmBR is from my stash
That is what I have so far, the build will start in the new year, and will give us something to look forward to inn the Spring!!

Awesome!
Yeah good call on switching to the benchmark barrel.
Not sure I have anything to give here, but you’re already well on your way.
What are you looking for as far as bullets, powder, and primers?

Whenever someone asks about powder and bullets for the 6mmBR I always say
" Any powder will do as long as it's 30 grains of Varget pushing a bullet between 100 and 108 grains!"
CCI BR primers work very well but I have used several brands .

Default stock and action

So far, here are the stock and butt plate, and the action we are going to use for the rifle. The stock is a single shot laminated walnut so it will be stable and solid and the totally adjustable butt plate and cheek riser will work perfectly for different shooters. The recoil pad will be removed and the butt plate fitted.
I don't have the Timney handy ( can't find it at the moment !)
But that will go on the action.
A single shot follower will be made to fit after the action and barrel are bolted up by fps plus and sent back to me.:

Makes me wish I was still able to do gunsmithing, but alas my eyes and hands limit my abilities.

Curious as to what scope you're using for the build.

Well, that is up the air at the moment!
If i don't have one sourced out that i can afford when the rifle is assembled , I will use one of my own Long range scopes on it , it will be a bit of a goat roping though as they are already on two rifles that I plan to use as loaners .

if it’s of interest, i have 2 old school tasco target scopes. i think one is a 10x and one is 16x. i can check tomorrow. i’ll put up either one if you think they are suitable.

If they are the old Japanese built Tascoes they would be great scopes Duceman, sure, The 16X would work perfect!
That would be fantastic, thanks so much!

Yup, a no neck turn chamber be fine.
Do you need a dummy cartridge when I send down the barrel and action?

Yes a dummy round would be good as well as a new unfired brass . If I have a brass I can cut the chamber for minimum headspace for that brass.

No problem, I will send several cases down with the barrel and action as well as a dummy round for you

Well, Rugerfan dropped off the barrel tonight, and the action and scope are in the mail, things are coming together!

What’s the twist on the barrel? Are you guys shooting the heavier 6 mm bullets or the lighter stuff?

She's a 1:8, planning on setting up a few 105 Hornady fir you to cut the chamber with .
Interestingly enough, my own 6MM BR Krieger/Omark will shoot any brand of bullet well from 105 to 108 when they are set at 1.840!
It's a bit of a high miler when it comes to the round count but still holds 3/4 MOA off the bags with a scope on a good day , more than good enough for the sling'n'irons!

WHOOOHOO!
Barreled action came in the mail today
I made a decision to switch stocks as the 950T stock was a better fit than the o Omark stock I thought might work.
This one will let me use the front action screw hole that is already there in the stock, and there is lots of room for the rear action screw.
The 950T is a round bottom action but there is more than enough wood to accommodate the Mauser flat bottomed action and the trigger group lines up really well with the mortise in the stock that is already there.
On top of that, there is a flat cut into the right side of the stock that was originally there for the rear sight mount , but it will accommodate the bolt release perfectly!
Things are looking up and coming along nicely!

Do you have bases and rings Cat? I've got a few different sets sitting here, Talley and Burris...what do you need?

If I don't have a set that works, I will sponsor a set.

That would be sweet!
Dick284 and I were planning on going halfers on a 20MOA rail, but I don't think the scope has rings.
The action already has a set of bases on it, maybe you could find a set of
Z rings maybe? This rig is going to make to the trip to 1K so standard rings and bases won't cut it...!
Hopefully we can get a rail for the '98 without too much problem
