Default New friend in camp

Well it seems that we have an new uninvited friend at our camp. A couple of the boys just got back with a hair raising story. The woke last night to a scratching sound in the tent. With due care they turned on thier flashlights and low and behold...... A skunk has decided to use our mouse traps as a feed line for his/her family ( we sort of wondered where all of our traps have been going to, now we know). They were careful not to disturb the little black and white b@%@@$d so as not to inflict pain on the tent. So does anyone know of something that we can put around the tent as a deterent to our new found friend.

I had a skunk going under one of my sheds, so I threw some moth balls around the perimeter of the shed. Whether coincidence or they worked, the skunk did leave.

My question is how much longer is your camp still up and running.

obviously doing the little sh!t in with a well placed shell inside the tent is out of the question. and if we find him outside the obvious is obvious I was just wondering myself about mothballs as we will try them anyway but was checkin for another cure.

Take a live trap to camp...once you have him, drop him in the water. No spray.....worth the effort.

Curious........how does one get the trapped skunk from inside the tent to the water without getting sprayed?

The skunk live traps are low to ground, so the skunk can't raise their tail to spray .... at least that's the theory

And slowly walk up to the trap with a blanket or some sort of cover.....just side it over the trap....always keeping it so they can't see you. When you get to the water slide it off and drop the whole cage in....never had one spray yet.

And I've actually put permanent sides on a coupla traps for this purpose...

Just get ride of the mice and then you will haveno skunk problems. Instead of using mouse traps, buy some irish spring soap. Put them around the camp. I use it on the holiday trailer and never have mice........

What works for one might not work for others.

Go Flames.

MY grandfather used to live trap skunks as part of a rodent removal business back in the day. He used to take the skunks out to an old field and drop them off. One day he got a little slack and had thought that the skunk had cleared the trap and beat it for the woods. My grandmother brought him meals in the barn for a few days.

Default Set up a bait

Set up a bait pile for the little bugger (they love cat food or canned salmon) away from the tent, get a spotlight, a lawn chair, 12 guage shotgun, and a beverage of choice and wait. You should also consider wind direction in your setup

Bushmaster, if you live trap him your still gonna get stinky when you go to recover the lil buggar.
If you use a killin trap your still gonna get stinky.
If you use a well place .22 your still gonna get stinky...
I only have experience in seeing the aftermath of three above mentioned techniques of dealing with them lil rodents...
I aint picking on anyone here , but I can only imagine the look and thoughts of those guys in the tent ROFLMAO.

257, I've trapped quite a few of them around my yard and have never had one spray yet when using this method.

And I usually put the cage on the front rack of my quad and drive it down to the dugout...over a real bumpy trail...clip a rope to the cage and throw it in. Wait an hour to retrieve and dump the body in the field soemwhere....no stink whatsoever.

Skunk green thumbs!

All you need to do is place a garbage bag around the cage before you set it.
Lid closes, pick up the garbage bag and take him to your trucks exhaust pipe.
Cut a small hole in the back of the bag and let her fill up with exhaust.

They dont spray because they arent panicked...drop a skunk in the water with nothing covering the cage and you can bet your life on that thing spraying tail up or down.

I trapped skunks and coons for damn near 10 years and Ive been sprayed!

an open can of sardines has always worked best for me.

got the rest of the story when they got home. Woke to scratchin turned on the flashlights and there he was. Ok now what do we do. They did the right thing watched quietly as he did his thing with the traps and let him leave on his own. Needless to say no more sleep that night waitin for the little bugger to maybe come back. They tried to seal the tent up as best they could and hope we don't have a skunk in the beds tonight when the next wave of boys hit the tent for huntin. On a side note never thought of the garbage bag around the trap we are takin up, always covered the trap with a tarp but a bag would make it easier to move to the truck tailpipe.

I have live trapped and moved a fair number of skunks. Never thought of killing them as I had no reason to. Didn't want to eat them or skin them so why would I just kill them cause I could?

Never figured I sould kill a porcupine unless it was for the pot eather.

Kyle, I've dumped many a skunk in the water...not one has ever sprayed.

Worst thing that happened was the one trap...it was a solid body trap.....floated, tipped upside down, the latch slipped open and the skunk swam away....and they swim just fine thank you !!

Ive never been sprayed but.....

I have been bitten twice, I wouldnt advise trying it.

Id rank it second only to a fisher bite, thats gotta be the meanest little creature in mother natures army. Its like a wild pitbull
