If your freeboard is more than 50cm. you need a boarding device.

I tied a rope around a mooring cleat, tied a a loop so I could get my foot into it, hung it into the water, adjusted it so I could step into the loop and put myself into the boat. Works great. I figured it out when bigger people couldn't get back in the boat after wiping out tubing or skiing. Cheap and legal, I officially call it a rope ladder !

Dale is correct - the law clearly says 0.5M (50cm) you must have a boarding device.

How is freeboard measured for that determination? From the waterline or from the splash rail up to the gunwales?

as per goneoutdoors.com: Freeboard: For small boats, it is the minimum distance from the top edge of the side of the boat, or gunwale, down to the waterline.

news to me, my bad, based my answer on my experiences with 'authorities' out on the lake who checked alot of things but never, never whether i had a boarding ladder, on my 14 footer before my 16 footer to my current 19 footer, learned something new, thanx for chiming in with the law perspective, perhaps its only been on the books last 10,20 years?

An old thread guys. But im wondering what kind of boat ladders you have all done before. Im only thinking for when the fishing is slow and my girls want to go for a swim. I have an 18ft aluminum boat. Pics would be awesome.

Lots of pre-fabricated options to choose from. Go to any boat shop and l9ok at some options or on line. Easy to install and they fold up or telescope in and out for storage. No biggie really and not a big expense for a good piece of saftey equipment.
